Default Make tracks inactive takes ages

Running a pretty big session - 175+ tracks on an HD3 system. 96 voices over 3 DSP chips. Most of the tracks have been made inactive. System is running OS 9.2.2 PT 5.3.1 on a DP1.25Ghz Quicksilver. 7 Slot Magma chassis. Control 24. sessions are mainly on an internal fast IDE on the fast bus.
It's the same running from our SCSI drives as well.

My problem is when I select only 8 of the active tracks (only 40 or so are not hidden at one time) and make them inactive my system will almost freeze (the only thing that works is the mouse - no clock, nothing else) for up to five minutes before finally making the tracks inactive.
I've got so sick of waiting at times I have force quit the Mac and started again only to encounter the same thing on reboot.

I have also had a few DAE error -1's on boot but a couple of attempts fixes this.

A search on DAE -1 brings up Digi setup things to try - all of which I've done- and Focusrite D3 issues which were fixed with a version change a long time ago.

Any ideas?
