I've borrowed a friend's Tascam FW-1082 and was hoping to use it as a control surface. I've tried connecting the Firewire and it's not being recognized by it's control software so I tried just setting it up to send MIDI commands. The MIDI IN light on the 1082 is flashing red and when I move faders the MIDI OUT light flashes green for a second then Pro Tools tells me it can't properly communicate with the HUI device.
Chain is as such: FW-1082 MIDI I/O CH 1 -> M-Audio ProFire 2626 MIDI I/O -> PT9 on Mac OS 10.6.8 2.7 Ghz i5 w/ 8GB RAM Any thoughts? I feel like I'll be kicking myself as soon as this is resolved... |

Someone more informed than myself might be able to correct me, but...
I'm not aware that PT supports firewire controllers (though there is the 003). Ethernet might be the way to go regardless, assuming that's an option with that unit. Plus I've always known HUI (and gear that emulates HUI) to be mostly (if not solely) ethernet (or midi?) controllers. EDIT: I did some quick googling and I couldn't find any protools firewire control surfaces...only firewire audio interfaces. Though the MIDI should work, provided it's a HUI supported device. I'm not really aware of a lot of the newer rules regarding control surfaces, so I'm mostly speaking in terms of the way PT has handled this previous to V9/10. Also, I'm assuming you're setting everything up in Setup/Peripherals/MIDI(or ethernet) controllers - and all of your ins and outs are correct. |

Yep, double checked my ins and outs and have it set up in the peripherals dialogue. From what I've read, it says it is HUI compatible, I just can't seem to make it work properly.

it makes more sense once i googled the controller. it's essentially a tascam version of a 003. tascam says it's compatible w/ protools as a HUI surface.
in peripherals, you also have HUI selected as type? you might want to check your mac's Audio Midi Setup to see if this thing even shows up there. and also in protools... setup > MIDI > Input devices (make sure the controller is selected) I've never owned a 002 or similar, so I'm guessing based on my experience with other stuff. :) |
