Bounce Mix 96kHz/24bit to MP3 = 16bit

Session is setup for 96kHz/24bit. (PT 2020.9 Monterey OS)

Bounce Mix as AIFF or WAV allows me to use those settings (i.e. 24bit depth)...

but when bouncing to MP3 the settings change to 9600/16-bit. Bit depth is grayed and can't be changed.

Is this a limitation of MP3 format?

This has been discussed on DUC a fair amount.

MP3 has no bit depth, the encoding does not work that way.

The forum search doesn't work particularly well.
Best way is to google like this:
site:duc.avid.com searchword
The search result will show only hits on the DUC.
…also:
site:avid.secure.force.com
will limit the search results to the Avid Knowledge Base.
