Default MIDI Assignments / Automation Made Easy?

I'm running PT Studio on Mac OS.

How do I assign software instrument plug-in parameters in Pro Tools to the knobs on my external MIDI controller?

For example, I am using Arturia Analog Lab and I want to automate some of it's parameters using the knobs on my keyboard. When I go to the automation page in Pro Tools for Analog Lab, I get a list of about 100 controller #s instead of parameter names, so it's a total guessing game to even find what controller number / parameter I'm trying to automate. I'm thinking if I can quickly assign any parameter to a MIDI controller knob, I don't have to struggle this way.....

I am very familiar with writing automation in Pro Tools, just not how to quickly assign something to a MIDI controller knob.

Thank you.

I tried it on my carbon and it’s auto-assigned. Have checked with arturia support on this?

You need to use MIDI Learn to assign your controllers. Should be in the Analog Lab manual.

Thanks for the responses / input on this. I figured it out:

First of all, brain fart on my end, my question was in regards to Spectrasonics Omnisphere and not Analog Lab (although the following applies to all plug-ins, that I know of):

In order to assign knobs to automate Omnisphere parameters, you have to right-click on a parameter and first choose "Enable Host Automation". Then right-click the parameter again and choose "MIDI CC Learn". The parameter highlights and is now ready to be assigned. BUT, it's important to note that the MIDI track in Pro Tools that you want to write the automation - you must have that tracks RECORD button turned on or the controller knob cannot be assigned. After you successfully make your knob assignments, each parameter displays its controller number, in case you just have to know exactly what those numbers are.

I find this to be a much quicker way to assign and write automation, by not going to the "AUTO" button in the plug-in window, then scrolling thru the list of parameters, assigning it and so on.....

I hope this helps.
