I'm experiencing problems with channel 1 and 2 in Pro Tools 2024.10.2. (Unable to reproduce this problem in LUNA).
I was taking my x4 for a test drive yesterday and hooked up 4 microphones and assigned them to each one of the mics to record my acoustic guitar. I engaged auto-gain, and everything looked good in UAD Console; all microphones showing similar signal strength going into UAD Console. I moved over to Pro Tools 2024.10.2 and assign each mic to a separate input and track. I start to record and the mics on channels 3 and 4 look fine, however channels 1 and 2 are only recording a transient here and there. I then swapped the mic inputs of 3 and 4 with 1 and 2 and vice versa. Again everything looks good in UAD Console. I checked monitoring within UAD Console and everything sounds good on channels 1 through 4. I go back into Pro Tools and get the same outcome; channels 1 and 2 are still behaving the same, receiving a piece of a transient here and there. *** Interestingly - If I sing, channels 1 and 2 pick up significantly more information than if I am strumming my guitar. *** I was able to find a work around. If I route Channel 1 to AUX 1 and Channel 2 to AUX 2 (within UAD Console) , then switch my inputs for those channels in Pro Tools to AUX 1 and AUX 2, then everything works fine. I get expected input levels and audio is normal. Troubleshooting: So far I have uninstalled the Universal Audio Software, restarted my computer and reinstalled it. I have reset my Apollo x4. I have deleted Pro Tools preferences, then uninstalled Pro tools, restarted computer, then reinstalled pro tools. In Pro Tools, I have erased the I/O and reset to the default settings, this did not work. So far none of these have fixed this problem. I tested this in LUNA and everything worked fine; all channels 1 - 4 receive signal and sounds great. It seems to be an issue with Pro Tools or possibly a setting within UAD console. Has anyone run into this issue or have any possible recommendations for further troubleshooting? I suspect you have an issue with macOS's very annoying mic voice isolation mode being enabled for Pro Tools. Look under the orange mic icon in the macOS menubar when Pro Tools has focus. Like everything you are describing can fit that cause...

Also happens with other external microphone/inputs and not just in pro tools. Agree on annoying

The OP said this is happening in Pro Tools and not Luna, that it happens only on input 1 & 2 and not 3 & 4 and how the Console Aux routing fixed the problem (a great troubleshooting test) seems consistent with macOS having Pro Tools screwed up in mic voice isolation mode. I think Voice isolation only works on the first channel on an interface. That is normally a single mono mic, but I think there are cases where it will affect the first two channels if it thinks there might be a stereo input. I'm not sure exactly sure how it does that, but this is where I'd focus first. And yes beyond that UAD Console is always a suspect as the OP pointed out and I'd try doing a reset on that if it's not voice isolation. Last edited by Darryl Ramm; 01-22-2025 at 03:27 PM. |
