Default Point me to current PC build info?

Hey All!

I'm looking to build a new beast of a machine for PT10 and was wondering what thread is most current on PC specs? There are a handful floating around now and I'm not sure which one to use:

http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=238426

http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=62234
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=165760
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=200560

Or is there something more current in one of the PT10 forums?

Thanks peeps.
Andrew

Those are older links(but the i7 Builds is a fantastic source of info, tweaks, warnings and more). What you want to build today would be based on an X79 motherboard(Asus seems to be the leading choice, with Gigabyte as the #2 choice) with a socket 2011 intel i7 quad or 6 core(roughly $299 and $579 respectively). Add a quad-channel RAM kit(16GB or 32 if you can afford it) from the motherboard manufacturer's list of approved RAM. A power supply of 650 watts or better(my opinion). A good cpu cooler and a DVD burner(plenty of options there). 2 hard drives minimum(SSD for system if you can afford the price of admission), 3 drives is better(I run 4 here-system, samples, audio1, audio2). A quiet case(Antec P280 is a good option unless you need rackmount). A modest graphics card from nVidia(fanless). Install Windows 7 x64, do the tweaks and have fun. Poke around the DUC as I have seen a few parts lists worth copying(but ONLY intel i7 socket 2011 and X79 mobo, unless you are on a shoestring budget). This rig should be around $1400, unless you have some old parts that are up to date(like SATA drives, DVD burner, PSU, case, graphics). If cash is too tight for this build, then the only other package I would consider is an older(relatively speaking) X58 mobo, i7 socket 1366 and triple-channel RAM(3 matching sticks). That's a proven package that still offers good performance and the best chance of delivering(the socket 1155 and 1156 stuff is too hit or miss, as is the AMD stuff. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't)

BTW, the first link(i7 Builds) and the first build listed(name Sawllkwa) is essentially what I just described

Great information here! Thanks albee!

I'm currently pricing out some of the items you mentioned (ahhh the fun of building a system online!...seriously...it is fun) and there is one thing that is confusing me. I'm looking at two different i7's:

i7 3820
i7 3930K

Both have a Max Memory Size of 64GB (which is great because I want to totally max out my RAM for large Virtual Instrument templates). But they have different Max Memory Bandwidths. Any idea how important this is to RAM performance? My assumption would be that if the Max Bandwidth is less than the Max Memory Size then anything above the Max Bandwidth is not used.

Back to building.....
Andrew

3820 is a quad core and 3930 is a 6 core, so the performance boost should be pretty significant. Having said that, I still get darn good performance with my old i7 950 quad(but the 6 core is what I would build if I were doing it today):

2x the power over the 920!!! That's amazing. Not sure when I'm going to actually buy and build this stuff but the info you've all given me is driving me to do it NOW! And just before Christmas...how am I gonna explain this one to the powers that be?

i wasnt actually prepared to build a new machine either. i just happened to look at a few parts at newegg on thanksgiving day and realized the massive deals the next few days. i saved over 400$ on the build that day. built an entire new machine except for hard drives for 1k. could not ask for it to be cheaper! my wife had a kid a couple weeks earlier so i figured she was to busy to notice what i was doing
