Default Need Info To Build New AMD System For PT 7.0

I’m going to go ahead and build a new desktop for PT 7.0

Before anyone rags on me – I did look through several posts under the best desk-top threads, and did some searches. I'm looking for a straight/current answer, so I'm posting for help.

When it comes to Video & Audio production I’m a pretty loyal AMD man, so I’m hoping to get the following recommendations based on a rock solid AMD 64 – single processor system:

What chipset is approved by Digi?
How is a socket 939 different from a 754 or a 940 - what's it all mean!!?
Are the newer PCI express vid cards ok to use?
Can anyone recommend a few good AMD 64 boards that they have tried and got good results with?
Any other advice for hardware and set-up I may need to know?

Thanks a lot

there is a 939 board that is recommended by digi on there site.

754 is the old socket adn now the modile socket for athlon 64's
940 is the OLD athlon 64 socket and now the Opteron Socket.
PCI express shouldn't make a difference.
Just use anything off the recommendation list and you should be good.
Setup? Just make sure you have a system drive and a seperate drive for recording. I have 2 SATA drives and i haven't had a problem with them... I can write 32 tracks at a time with plugins running and it doesn't choke.
Now that dual core is supported and you can use more plugins i think it wouod be save to say that 2gbs of ram is a good idea since we will be ale to get about 2 times the plugins count.

And also 939 is the only Athlon socket that uses Dual-core for Athlon 64's unless you get a dual core opteron.

Hope this helps.

It might also be worth mentioning that AMD recently announced that they are going to begin phasing out the socket 939 as well. Here is a link:

I would think twice before you upgrade your system by building a single processor pc. I think the main focus behind 7.0 was that you can dual core. I lost performance with my AMD64 3700 when I upgraded to 7.0. Had to increase the hardware buffer on a good few of my sessions.

I do have a dual Ath system that is dedicated to video editing.
I am not convinced that the performance per dollar is worth the extra money.

I love my dual AMD system - it rocks, but I am sure that a slammin 3700+ 64 will give me all the power that I require for what I do.

90% of the time I am cutting 30 & 60 second spots for radio. 10% I'm recording with my 5 piece rock band ( I wish those numbers were reversed! )

Here is the system that I am thinking of.

Asus K8V SE Deluxe socket-754 Motherboard with AMD 64 3700+
2 gig pc3200 ram
Win XP Pro 64 bit
Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Vid Card 256 meg
60 Gig 7200rpm OS Drive
250 Gig media drive

Any comments on where I might be going wrong????

Yes. PT will not run on a 64 bit OS. Get the plain old XP home or pro...not the 64 bit edition.

Yes...but the cost of 940 cpu's is ridiculous at present.

I gained performance on my Athlon 64 3700+ (939).
