Hello, I am new to Pro Tools, have 5 years experience with Ableton Live, and have been playing music all my life.
Seeking referrals to the simplest and most direct way to record my first audio track. I have tried several searches and have downloaded the Pro Tools Reference Guide with 1,500+ pages. Several of the videos and sites I have looked at specify things I do not see on my Pro Tools screen, perhaps older versions. My version is 2024.10.01. Windows 10 pro, Focusrite Scarlett audio interface I have succeeded in creating an audio track. I do not see how to start recording. What are the simplest and most direct beginner tutorials? Think "for dummies"..... Thanks Miguel Last edited by MiguelColombo; 01-07-2025 at 01:44 PM. |

Search youtube for things like "getting started in pro tools"(but without the quotation marks). Hopefully you have an audio interface and a mic? Speakers or headphones? Also, Avid has videos here: https://www.avid.com/pro-tools/getting-started One thing to remember: when recording an instrument(like guitar, bass, keyboard, etc), record to an AUDIO track. INSTRUMENT tracks are for virtual instruments(plugins). Good luck and welcome aboard!

You need to just keep searching for video tutorials on YouTube, narrow them down to what you are doing, e.g. recording vocals, types of instruments etc. Look for more recent videos, in the last few years.
But some steps that may help... If you have an audio track, the input I/O selector on that track should be set to whatever mic or line input on the Focusrite you are recording from. If lost there look up IO selectors in the reference guide. You click the red record arm button on the track, then click the record and then play buttons on the transport controls. The Pro Tools UI behaves very much like an old multitrack tape recorder. Do you see the transport run (timer advancing), waveform being drawn on the audio track? If you are monitoring through the Focusrite hardware monitoring then select option>low latency monitoring to disable Pro Tools software monitoring. |

Thanks also to Darryl, I will continue looking for various help sites. Also thanks for the tips, I will try to figure out how it all works with Pro Tools. Besides Ableton, I have experience with Camtasia, that has some sound recording and editing along with the video capture and editing. Interesting wrinkle that "instrument" tracks refer to midi sounds. Cheers, Miguel

We should have also mentioned there are commercial training videos available, amongst the best are from Groove 3: https://www.groove3.com/browse/daw/p...ord=&type=1309. You can try a 7 day trial, then say do a monthly subscription to keep access to their videos if you want to.

Thanks .......Dave, yes I have Focusrite Scarlett audio interface with 4 xlr inputs, dual monitors and headphones, also several microphones. I have been doing recordings with Ableton about 5 years, but it seems to be focused on electronic music (I do throw some midi in there, bass, strings, etc) whereas Pro Tools seems to be the industry standard for recording. I will likely be hanging out on this forum as time permits. Thanks again, Miguel
