I had this issue for the first time today, after thousands of mp3 imports over the years. Mp3 plays fine elsewhere but after importing into PT multiple times, it had clicks every time, sounded like clocking issue but that's not the case.

I put into RX9 and exported as WAV and it was fine.

That is just bizarre. Avid needs to fix this so we don't have to mess around with other apps. Been using Cubase to convert to wav and importing that.

Hey just wanted to add my name to this list, am having the same issues, bit depth shows 32 on import and about 20% of the mp3s imported are corrupt, clicks and pops. I've been importing mp3s for years without issue. I'm using 2021.12 on Catalina.

...forgot to mention my workaround: open the mp3 in Quicktime Player v10 and select "Export as Audio Only" then import the exported file, works fine but a big hassle to add a step when importing hundreds of mp3s.

iTunes? Ugh no, you don't need to faff around with iTunes/Music to convert from MP3. Macs ships with the afconvert utility. Afconvert can read but not write mp3 files, and can convert mp3 files to many formats. It's a bit finicky and produced useless error messages, so sometimes you may have to play around finding the right options to get it to work

Here is an example of converting an mp3 file to aiff

$ afconvert -d BEI16 input.mp3 output.aiff

(i.e. convert a big endian 16 bit integer mp3 to aiff PCM file)

And again don't have permission crap strikes again. Avid is in a pretty bad state when it has not got the technical capability to run a simple community forum.

Or if you have a directory of mp3 files to convert here is a script. Stupidly simple, modify away. (image file because DUC is broken).

Thanks for the tips Darryl, I was able to see the code and will give it a shot. Still a workaround though so an extra step, does AVID have a response to this? I'll keep poking around. I tried to create a support ticket with my ASC but ran into dead ends, "server not responding at this time please try again later". Hm.
