Default Hybrid Engine vs Non-Hybrid HX|2 in Post.

I have one system that is a Mac Pro 5,1 running High Sierra with 48GB of RAM and HDX|1 with 2021.10

And another system that is a Mac pro 5,1 running High Sierra with 40GB of RAM and HDX|2 2020.12.

Video is MXF.

If I run the 2021.10 system in Hybrid, even in small sessions (like 20-30 tracks) I have 9173 errors and alerts and hangs all the time.. Usually around Acon Digital Extract Dialogue or Deverberate. But other plugs too. It seems like I have to keep things smaller than before. It does work better when I put the HW buffer to 1024. But for a 30 track session?

Whereas, if I move these to the 2020.12 HDX2 and NOT in hybrid, the sessions run great.

I know some will say -- Get a new computer. That ain't gonna happen soon. And I have been over the optimization docs again and again. Also, checked on latest plugins.

Anyone else seeing this? Any fixes? Or, just wait for PT to sort it out in a new version.

Hm, both versions need 10.14.6 as the minimum. Not sure if that relates to your problem though...
I have no problems running either version on my 5,1 under Mojave but I don't use HDX so it might not compare.
My current work session is 600 voices and about 40 print tracks.

Thanks.

I was just informed by a great source that I should just bite the bullet and get a metal video card and upgrade to Mojave. I was hoping to avoid that.

I'll report back once I do that.

Tom

On my 5.1 I had much better performance after I installed a Metal card (RX 580 in my case). I don't have any experience with Hybrid though.

It's very easy. Did it two years ago. Fairly cheap and was a 5 minute swap of the card.

Even a single instance of realtime Acon Digital Extract Dialogue will eat half your CPU. It's best to use that tool rendered on the old 5.1 macs.

Regarding the Metal card, if you can get hold of specificaly this one: https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/cons...se-rx-570-8gd5 you'll need only 1 power cable and can use the other for the HDX cards without the use of splitters.

Just reporting back that I installed the metal cards and upgraded to Mojave on both machines. The cards came with power cables but they were the same ones I already had in the machines so I just reused them. After getting the systems updated and clean, I updated to 2021.12 on both machines. Everything has been running rock solid, I have more power available and it "feels" smoother (which could be my imagination). Shoulda done this before.

Anyone on High Sierra with a cheese grater Mac Pro 5,1 or 4,1, I recommend this upgrade.

Thanks everyone!
