Default Why mp3 encoding still restricted to 16 bit ?

Ok so you may not know (or not) that the mp3 encoding is a 32 bit float process : So why does Pro Tools truncate the output to 16 bit before encoding to mp3 ?

The reference manual does not give any info, apart to say that any dither needed has to be put in place by the user, Pro Tools won't do it for you.

I often bounce at the end of a work session a MP3 file in the highest quality setting and send it by mail to the client. It is very annoying to have to instantiate a 16 bit dither as it should not be normally necessary
Thanks
Mark

It is free so maybe some limitations come from how Avid has licensed it? I am using Sonnox Pro-Codec for final mp3/AAC

I thought that is was always 16 bit... anyway... there's no future to it...

On April 23, 2017, Technicolor's mp3 licensing program for certain mp3 related patents and software of Technicolor and Fraunhofer IIS has been terminated.

You really think that’s gonna make a massive difference to a 320kbps mp3?

In theory it changes the sound before mp3 encoding, but nobody hears it after decoding back and listen

Out of all the improvements that could be made to Pro Tools, this one must surely rank at the bottom of the pile.

+1!
Who cares mp3 anymore, it's dead.
