I'd start with maxing out your ram if you're on a native system.
As far as "deal" goes... on the DV Toolkit... I doubt it.

Non HD, using the computer's native processing power.

I think you're maxed at 2 gig memory on that iMac.

Any way, you will need to spend money on decent monitors, and room acoustics first.

you wont believe that the acoustic room is off to the side of the office and the monitors are there too (in the office).., i have yammy monitors for the padded room (which can also be used as a padded room for those times one runs ot of coffee) which is why i couldn't refuse such a great offer.., i get to inherit the sound room by coincidence.., the sound guy just left and it was up for grabs.., one of those lucky breaks i guess ??

yep, maxed out at 2 gig!!

That sounds like an upgrade price. Cheapest way to get DVTK2 new is through a student discount. It's a whopping 50% off for software through student discount. At least that's how it is out here. Classes aren't cheap either though.

I doubt you'll find it for $40, but I got my DV Toolkit on ebay for $600 USD.

eBay is the place to check. Some people are selling the Toolkit 2 only license (ie, not including the extra plugs, just the track expansion and timecode/editing features) as low as $299. Digitranslator can be had seperately for $149 as well.
