I notice in the reference system the additional PCI ATA 100 Drive controller is no longer included. Is this extra drive controller no longer a performance booster? Should the drives be put on the same Primary IDE chain of the motherboard and the CDROM drive on the Secondary IDE chain?

Thanks!

The ATA100 card is a performance booster, just not a required item here. I definitely recommend it for around 20.00 at www.newegg.com and at least put your audio drives on this card.

Greetings Allen (and Phil),

Have a question regarding RAM. Several of us noticed that having just one stick of RAM seemed to cause fewer problems on PC133 systems. Has anyone noticed a problem running TWO sticks in DDR machines?

I know, it sounds a bit flakey, but RAM seems to be a bit of a dicey thing sometimes, I certainly found that one stick often worked more stabley than two.

I ask this because I'm about to build a machine and need to decide on RAM purchase. 256 or 512? (ie add another 256 stick later)

Any advice welcome,

Cheers,

Haigbabe

I haven't had any problems with the Micron PC2100 DDR ram so far with two sticks. I have seen problems with the SDRAM sticks though like you said. One stick would be best or two from the same lot.

Just so people know that the Abit board I listed comes with a HiPoint Raid controller that some people have had problems setting up with PTLE. I recommend the Promise ATA100 TX2 card with this motherboard and disabling the onboard raid feature of this board.

i just want to throw in that (much in part to allan's raves) i got the xp1600, a7v266-e, system and although i had a bear of a time getting the whole thing together and running on 98se(i know, not recommended) it has been worth it. most of the problem was that i was trying to use an audio drive from my p3 system that needed to have ez-bios removed to be recognized by the asus.

i don't have any idea about how the system runs on any tests or any of that crap but i do know that i have spent every waking moment recording for the past two weeks. this system will do anything i ask it.

although i was ready to jump head first off my deck a few weeks back, i am so completely happy now.

jon,
Groovy. I've got exactly the same setup - same MB & processor anyway. My system has been a dream.

Have some fun! You were too stressed out for too long!!

Cheers,
Mark

I just completed an A7V266E with 1.4ghz T-bird, ATI Radeon Video card, Maxtor Quiet drive and all the other specs I listed on the new system on Windows XP. This thing rocks. Zero problems on installation from the ground up. Took me two hours for entire assembly, format of HD and WinXP install. So far WinXP is definitely a great OS. Volcano II is much quieter than the Volcano 7 heatsink/fan combo too.
Can't wait to try WinXP on PTLE. Keep the reports coming folks.
