Re: Dolby E mix on DVCAM, Which decks are supporte
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply. I'm well aware of Dolby Digital, AC-3, Dolby E, etc. It seems that the poster's ORIGINAL question has gotten lost in the subsequent posts (as happens frequently, like the telephone game). He says he has an opportunity to playback a mix using Dolby E, and wants to do that rather than a DVD, and the theater has the ability to decode it, so........what, if any, DVCAM decks can he use so as to avoid lugging his DigiBeta or HD decks to the theater? (sound of me climbing onto soapbox) I know we all are always trying to help each other out, and the posts are well-intentioned, but sometimes these threads descend into a slew of, "Well, what you SHOULD do is...." when the original poster may have already done all the research he/she needed to decide on the best direction and just needs specific info on a specific approach, not all the (many) alternatives. (sound of me climbing off soapbox) Great info to hear that the 5.1 (by itself) can go 16 bit, but the 5.1/Lt/Rt combo requires 20 bit. Thanks, Brad! |

Re: Dolby E mix on DVCAM, Which decks are supporte
Sorry if I confused matters or made incorrect assumptions. His original post emphasized that it was much easier to carry a DVCAM deck to the theater. And because a previous post had concluded that it is impossible to put Dolby E on DVCAM, I thought that it would help to propose an idea that would allow him to use a DVCAM deck.
Cheers, Paul |

Re: Dolby E mix on DVCAM, Which decks are supporte
Hi Paul,
Yes, this thread has gotten a few conflicting opinions, sorry for my soapboxing So, based on Brad's post about being able to encode the 5.1 only using Dolby E at 16bit instead of 20, is the DVCAM layback impossible, or just untested and/or unreliable or inadvisable? In regard to an AC3 layback, can the cinema processor decode AC3 from a non-sync (ie videotape or DVD) source? I've run into problems in the past where the older cinema processors can only decode Dolby Digital or Dolby Lt/Rt when they're coming off of a film print. Puffin's particular theater, with it's Dolby E capability, leads me to believe that they have a recent model, but I've never heard of anyone screening AC3 from a non-sync source....... |

Re: Dolby E mix on DVCAM, Which decks are supporte
Well I have to take the HD deck there as it looks like the HD picture is a must.
I am encoding the 5.1 and a LTRT. Taking a dvd just for kicks to see if I can hear the difference. Thanks for the responses, good to see a debate on the board again!
