in the process of burning a cd the info comes off the hard drive, through the computer, out the scsii bus and through the electronics of the cd burner and it is interpreted by the laser to burn holes in the dye on the blank cd.

then the cd reader translates those holes into ones and zeros and sends that information to the digial to analogue converters.

My problem with the theory that CD media can have different sound charatcteristics is that those characterisitcs have to come from errors. If it's not the 1 or 0 that your file sent to the machine, then it's a error.
for there to be a characteristic to the media those errors must happen in a predictable way, and the nature of an error is that it is random, it's not ment to happen.
Theoretically random errors are unlikely to be the source of a sound characteristic. more likely it will be the A/D D/A, electronics of error correction in the cd player,, theoretically

How can you say it's Just 1's & 0's??

Isn't All digital recording (within ProTools for instance) Just 1's & 0's?? There can sure be a huge difference in the final within the digital domain, so why wouldn't the burning process Speed cause a difference in Tone, because the Laser is burning a Deeper grove (holes) at a slower speed, and the
difference in jitter would disuade the tonal integrity...?? NO??

BLER could be corrected with the correction circut?? haveing no actual affect on tone??

If you are really serious in Mastering, you won't master at CD-R but you'll use Exabyte. So the sounding of the writer/cdr/speed is a non-issue
But if you still want to make your pre-masters at CD-R also be carefull with choosing your CD-factory, there can be a difference in sound.

protools is the manipulation of those 1 & 0's. I'd hope they did change in the way I told them to.
The aim with everything you do after protools is not to change a single 1 or 0. theoretically what you spit out of that program, or your mastering program is the finished sound.
From there on I don't want it to have it's tone or quality altered.

None of us want anything modified.

The problems lie in the shortcomings of both CD players and glass mastering machines.

The reasons we use specific speeds (not to mention specific kinds of silkscreen graphics) have to do with making things easy for a real-world CD player. A perfect CD player could play anything perfectly. Most CD players are not perfect.

thanks for your ideas bob.
do you think it is possible for specific cd media to have differing effects on program material in a consistent way? In the same way that different types of analogue tape have different sounds?.

Different CD media have different success rates in geting a clean click free burn, but that a data medium not recording musical information in an analogue language can have a consistent modification effect on a piece of program music just doesn't sit quite right. logically it shouldn't happen like that.
What would be the theory behind such modifications in sound that would effect "warmth" etc only,? Why not a great big 3 k spike etc

The problem is that there are no absolutes. About all anybody can do is try different brands and listen on several different players to find a combination that you like.

Ok , this is way out of control! Hi Glenn, Hi guys, This all started with a question about cd speeds and errors. I approciate all the jokes and ideas and any channel of conversation is a good thing. One thing is for sure. We need 24 bit Cd's, what do you think of that, personally since we are driven by the market place, 44.1 is here to stay, just like the war over beta and VHS, now it's MP3 and midi disk, quality went out with the 8 track, were all doomed to lowfi!!
