Default Turning Off Time Machine

I realize this was discussed back in the early Leopard days, but I just upgraded my G5 system so I could run PT 8, and I can't seem to find the thread in Search. I have Time Machine OFF in Preferences, but every time I add a drive, it asks if I want to use the drive for backup. Is there any way to make it go away and ignore drives?

I believe the Terminal command you are looking for is:

defaults write com.apple.TimeMachine DoNotOfferNewDisksForBackup -bool YES

you may need to logout afterwards for it to take effect...

Hi!

I don't mean to be off topic but is there a way to tell time machine to just turn on at night? (Say, 9 pm to 6:am.) And be specifically in the off position during the day?

I don't think apple script can do it. I don't want to add any 3rd party software unless I have to.

TIA

I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to write a little cron job that runs a script that turns the service on and off...

That or an automator action that runs a little script...

Something using launchctl to start and stop the backupd service should do it...

If you want to create a job that uses launchctl, I recommend using Lingon. You will find it via versiontracker.com. I am in no way affiliated with Lingon. I have used it to create jobs that run at specified intervals on our Leopard server.

Thanks Chief! Pointing me to the terminal is the coolest but I am too afraid to jump in and use it! lol

Hi JC!
TimemachineEditor did not have the ability to keep TM turned off during the day. It's more for making sure TM runs at certain intervals.

TimeMachineScheduler seems just like what I wanted. It allows you to pick a beginning and end time for TM to "not turn on".

Hi Peter!
TM opens a volume onto the desktop. If PT is open, the TM volume becomes available to PT and therefore PT will not allow it to be ejected while open. I have also noticed when TM opens while I have a large session with all digi vi's maxed out, PT becomes less stable. So I turn TM off and after a few days I wish it was back on! hehe!

Thanks for everyone's help here on the duc. I have learned so much here that I can actually have a very positive experience using PT every day!

PS I'll report back if TimeMachineScheduler fails me. hehe!

I would and am using this Application.

MacPilot from Koingo software.

It will let you manually set the backup interval times etc.

Also this app gives you graphics control over many parameters you would normally have under OS X. I can totally recommend this application

heres is a download link to the demo:

MacPilot
