PT keeps shutting when I open a session

Hi all,

I'm sure this has happened to many of you...
There's that one session that you try to open. Whenever you do, that wonderful "Pro Tools has encountered an error and must shut down" window pops up.

Unfortunately, I forgot to set the "auto backup" option on in my preferences, and this session (which I just finished mixing ) will not open.

Does anyone have any creative solution? other than try to piece all the audio files back together again (which needless to say would be a nightmare)...

Create a new session and import everything into it from the one that will not open.

Thanks. But do you mean import the audio files and try to reconstruct everything?

Is there any way to salvage the session file?

You can import session data, which will allow you to import all the tracks with any plugs, automation, sends you have.

Which version of Pro Tools are you using?

I'm using PT 8.0
I try to import session data but I get a message about disk allocation and the the program just hangs.
Can you tell me what you do step by step?

Try holding the SHIFT key while you open the session. That will disable all the plugins(but not delete or change them). If the session now opens, you can go thru and enable plugins(I do one row at a time, holding the Alt key to enable the entire row). The save/close and reopen. If it opens, move on to the next row of plugins. If it does not open with a row enabled, you know that some plugin(used in that row of inserts) is bad/corrupt or outdated.

Well... The session does open when I do that but the plugins are all inactive, not bypassed. There's nothing I can do to get reactivated...

Ctrl+Start+Click on any disabled plug-in and it should be enabled.

You can also right-click on any plugin and select Make Active(or hold the Alt key and do all tracks, one insert slot/row at a time). This is how I was able to figure out that Waves was causing several sessions to not load(Pro Tools would abruptly close). Turns out I needed an update.
