Default audio midi setup problems PLEASE HELP!!!!

when I try to run the audio midi setup on my mac it won't run and reccomends that I remove any new drivers. I Have done so and it still won't run. Even worse though, is that protools wont boot up. it gets stuck at the point of midi setup. I have a session in five hours and im freaking out. I left for holiday, everything worked perfect. I return and its all a mess. Please help me. Anyone!!! Please I am running PT 8 on an imac 2.66 dual core duo through a digi 002
Thank you

Have you gone through the ususal troubleshooting process? (deleting prefs and databases, etc.)
Who used the machine till you were on holiday? (bad software/driver install could happened)
How is your os updated? (from net, or combo update)

yeah i have done all those basic steps. I have deleted the only newish driver that has been installed (proremote). Noone else has used my machine but me. my os was updated on the net. where might I find a driver if the uninstall process didn't work? I just keep getting the same message that the audio midi server couldn't be launched, delete new drivers bla bla. Is there a way to see drivers without running the audio midi setup? What should my next step be? Im really losing it. I've never had this problem

Do you have any system backups?
if not, I would try to download the combo updater, which is far better than upgrade through the net, install it. If that does not help, try uninstall reinstall pro tools and see if it helps.
Alternatively when pro tools is uninstalled, you can try to launch the audiomidi utility.
I'm afraid of that if none of the above suggestion helps you, nothing left, but an os reinstall.

Try this:

Go to MacHD>Users>your account>Library>Preferences>By Host and trash 'com.apple.midi.a bunch of numbers and letters.plist'.

Go to MacHD>Users>your account>Library>Preferences and trash 'com.apple.audio.audiomidisetup.plist'.

Empty the trash and restart, then see if everything is working.

Thanx Digi for offering advice and sorry for the late reply but I had fixed the problem before you had posted. trashing all the prefs using the pref and database helper was one of the first things I did I unplugged all my midi devices one by one until I got to the Akai MPD24 and then I was able to boot up audio/midi setup. then I physically deleted the driver icons and reinstalled them and I seem to be ok now. However, sometimes the problem reoccurs and I have to unplug the akai to get audio/midi to boot up. It opens up and the akai driver is greyed out until I plug it back in and then it works fine. Now though, the weird thing is, when I go to my midi inputs to assign a controller to a VI, the Korg Triton is no longer listed as a device. It still works if I select digi002 port 1 but it used to actually list the triton along with the Akai and others. I have not ben able to fix this. Any thoughts?
