Default Plug-Ins using tons of CPU

A thought occurs to me from reading some other posts.. It was mentioned that the spiking of CPU power use can happen because of plug-ins not having the most current drivers installed.. My question is, if after you've installed the most current drivers, are all of that particular plug-in's instances across many different sessions then updated, or do you need to save all the sessions without that plug-in, and then re-insert it again and save it so the newest drivers are in use?
