Default Help, new A7V333-X system wont boot

Hi,

I decided to build a new system for my PTLE 001. I got hold of the components, screwed it together & now it wont boot.

I can hear the HDD spin up for about 2 seconds and then the system stops. No display, no beeps.

I tried removing the M/B from the case (to isolate any shorting with the case), checking the CPU was properly seated, and removing all peripherals (leaving just power, CPU fan, power switch, and speaker). Still no life, not even a beep!!

Has anyone got any suggestions where to start, I suspect that I may have used the wrong model PSU.

System is:

Case: Lian-Li PC-60
PSU: Enermax EG365P-VE FM (I think this may be a problem, I thought I was getting the FMA. I noticed that that my "case fan lead" only has 2 wires, the M/B has 3 pins)
M/b: ASUS A7V333-X
RAM: Kingmax 512MB PC2700 FAST DDR SDRAM
CPU: AMD Athlon "Thoroughbred" XP 2100+
HDD: 80GB IBM Deskstar 120GXP ATA100
VGA: I am trying to use a Nvidia TNT2 PCI card until I can find some spare cash for a twin head AGP card

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">If you are not getting to post then it is usually one of three things. Ram, processor or motherboard. I would try reseating the ram. Put only one stick in the first slot. Disconnect any case fan you have attached to the motherboard. Reseat the video card and leave any other cards out for now. If you can get your hands on another processor you can replace the current processor or put this one in another compatible motherboard. It is probably the ram here. May not be compatible with this motherboard. If you need replacement ram go to www.crucial.com to get Micron that matches the motherboard.
Let us know how it goes.

That PSU should work fine, it just doesn't give you the ability to adjust the fan manually.
Hook the heatsink/fan directly to the PSU instead of the motherboard.

Hi Allen,

Thanks for the fast response. I have tried reseating tha RAM, no luck so far. I'm going to have to start returning h/w.

You mention that I should try one RAM stick in the 1st slot... I am only using one stick (is one stick OK?) and have tried all slots, not sure if the 1st slot is the one nearest to the CPU though.

I think I read somewhere that ASUS have a list of "qualified" RAM, but I haven't been able to find this on the global site. My supplier (Aria in the UK recommended the use of this RAM)

Neil,
I just found out today that the A7V333-X was revised to handle FSB333 processors and may not be backward compatible with FSB266. I'd call Asus tech support and get the real scoop. www.asus.com Don't email them or it will take a week before you get an answer. The new revision is 2.01.

Ok, here is the scoop. The A7V333-X had a PCB revision to allow it to run the newer FSB333 processors XP2500+ and above, but it is still backward compatible with FSB266 processors down to 700 Mhz Duron. I suspect you either have a bad processor or bad ram. I'd start with the ram.

I thought the new rev. for the A7V333-X was 2.01. Is it? Or is it 2.06?

Hi,

Well I reckon it is 333 FSB, there is a sticker on the board that say's so. I can't actually see a rev number on the MB though (I'm past 40 now, so I guess I must be losing my sight a bit )

Actually, I don't think this is the issue though, as I'm using a AMD Athlon "Thoroughbred" XP 2100+
(AIUHB a high-end TBredB). I think this CPU is 266FSB... Is that a problem with the RAM I'm using?
