Default Can\'t open song, need help with cryptic message

After a year and a half of researching the field and pouring over the posts in this user conference I finally purchased Digi 001 / PTLE. So I'm a newbie here, about a week into getting to know the system. Most of the time I'm smiling - PTLE is so logical and well laid out I wonder why I waited so long.

But last night, after multitracking on a song for a couple of hours - I was having a great time - I quit the song. About ten minutes later I tried to open up the song. I was not able to.

When I went to open a song, it started to load, with a small window rapidly displaying progress and the files it was loading. When it got to the file "Audio 1_O6" loading ceased and a window appeared asking to find Audio 1_06. I
located this file. It was right where it should be.

There were several buttons one could select. I chose OPEN. Then a window appeared with this message: "Audio 1_06 has too few samples. Regions referencing missing samples will be dropped from the regions bin. Do you want to continue?" What does this mean? The choices in this window were YES or NO. It didn't matter which choice I made, they both took me back to the window asking to locate Audio 1_06, and the song did not open. It had me going in circles.

Other buttons in the window asking to find Audio 1_06 include SKIP and SKIP ALL. SKIP did not appear to do anything. SKIP ALL opened up the song, but all the data in each track was missing, except the data in track Audio 1_06.

The result is that I cannot open up this song. Also, all of my automatic backups (about five of them) produce the same results. (so much for backing up) Bummer. Is the song lost? Corrupted? Is there a way to retrieve it? I don't mind losing Audio 1_06 but I'd rather not lose the whole file.

Comments and solutions most welcome. Thanks.

Does anyone out there in PT's land know what this is all about. I've never ran into this one?

The message is telling you that you are opening a file that has the same name but isnt the file. OR, an older version of the file that has been changed somewhat.

THis illustrates the importance of naming the tracks before you record them.
There are so many nightmare scenarios that can be avoided by naming the tracks first.

Michael - Yes, I have two drives. The internal drive that came with the G4, and an external Glyph firewire drive. The Glyph is my audio only drive. Why is this important? Have you any advice about dealing with this problem - is there a way to open up this file? Just to hear that someone else has experienced this gives me hope.

Chompers - your comment about naming tracks right away is well taken. I will make this a part of my recording procedure from now on. Just curious, why does this help?

Thanks.

What utility did you use to format your FireWire drive?

For best results, format FireWire drives using the Mac OS:
-Disable all non-Apple FireWire Extensions and restart the computer (very important).

-If the drive is raw, not yet initialized, just power it up and plug it into the Mac. The Mac will throw a "Unrecognizable drive..." dialogue and ask if you want to eject it or initialize it. Initialize it.

-If the drive is already initialized with something else, do the same thing...plug the drive into the Mac and then choose "Erase disk" from the "Special" menu.
Of course, this will destroy any data on the drive so back up first if necessary.

Digi - Thanks for your reply. How does your information regarding drives relate to my problem of not being able to open up a particular file? I'm missing something here.

[If the drive is already initialized with something else, do the same thing...plug the drive into the Mac and then choose "Erase disk" from the "Special" menu.]

After I did this, and then re-installed my files onto the Glyph drive, would I then be able to open the file I want to open, without any "error" messages?

Well, as you said in your initial post you don't mind losing that track. If that is the case, choose "skip" when it asks you to find the file and the sesssion will load sans audio1_06. I have had this problem too before and I have followed digi's instructions to the "T". It doesn't happen often, but when it does its a real pain in the ass. I think it is a bug, though, because it's as if the file just disappears when you know it was there 10 minutes ago. Welcome to the wonderful world of technology, ain't it grand!

Michael - Thanks so much for the offer. I tried to email you direct with more detail. Couldn't. Is your email address different than the one posted here?
