Default Pro Tools 2019.12 Ultimate Crashes 2019 Mac Pro

I'm in that unfortunately predicament where I had upgrade my computer, so now I have a new 2019 Mac Pro, running Catalina OS 10.15.3, with Pro Tools 2019.12 installed. I have an HDX card but I haven't installed it yet because I thought to test it native first. It's been a bit of a disaster.

PT launches Ultimate, because that's my license, and it goes through the long process of scanning the plugins. I've been using PT long enough to know to trash prefs and that you may have a sour plugin and to just pull it out of the Plug-Ins folder, but I'm getting crashes from lots of stuff that I know is supported: Waves v11, Izotope (sorta supported), but most confusing is VariFi – which I gather PT won't run without because it keeps reinstalling into the Plug-Ins folder. It's all very odd.

I am well aware that my system isn't supported so I don't expect a solution, per se, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue, because I know some people have got it up and running without any issues.

Thanks in advance.

Ryan

I can't provide any personal experience as I don't have one of those machines, just the usual questionnaire.

Did you set the MacPro up from scratch or did you migrate a backup?
I'd suggest you create a new user account and see if PT runs without hiccup from there. If so, there's gotta be something garbled up in the system files of your original user account.

Why don't you install your HDX card? Everyone I've seen on the DUC and Gearslutz is working fine, including me.

Thanks for the replies.

Meads – Shockingly, it's a completely fresh install. I did that specifically to have a nice, clean new system.

johnnyv – I'm going to try that today. I've been trying to close out a job from my laptop running a Sonnet chassis. I was hoping not to disturb the equilibrium there and thought that running it native would prove to be LESS of a hassle, given that it's actually supposed to be supported. I'll report back after I try it though.

2019 Mac Pro is still unsupported, have to wait until 2020.x release. Until that you are on your own. Some say switching to another slot helps.

We have the first HDX card in slot 6 and works great. New 28core 384 GB ram and loads of SSD space. Try that slot and see what happens.

Well, here's the update for posterity more so than anything else.

1) I trashed PT and reinstalled it without any other plugins. It seemingly worked great.

2) I installed the HD Driver and the HDX card, first in slot 6 then in slot 5, and the Mac didn't recognize it. Oddly though, when I booted up the Mac Pro, I could hear the HDX card's fan cycle, the way it does on boot up. But when I run DigiTest, nothin.

3) Everyone had been talking about the "Belkin Aux Power Cable Kit for Mac Pro", and to use the "Cable Set 3 PCIe Aux Power Cable 6-pin to 6-pin", which I bought and used (which obviously didn't work). However, in the cable that came with my HDX card, there's a cable that has the same connectors. I tried it as well (which also didn't work), but it connected fine. Here are some photos:

Large end:

Small end:

Motherboard to first cable (the one that's the same as the Belkin):

First cable to the harness of the second cable:

Second cable connected to the HDX card:

Am I crazy? Did I miss something? Is there a reason I'd need the Belkin cable?

Back to my issue...

Again, Pro Tools is crashing on the plugins launching but it's never the same plugins that cause it to crash. It's been Trim Ha Ha! VariFi and Izotope are culprits as well. I don't suspect that it's any one plugin though, it's some bigger.

I also think that everyone who has this up and running is on OS 10.15.2, right? It might be something with OS 10.15.3. Either way, it's been a very unproductive day.

Thanks again everyone.

Ryan

iZotope is a notorious crasher and Dfi plugins too. Nothing to worry about hardware-wise

I did a memory test this morning anyway but that’s not the issue. Thank you though.
