Default Can't open "session created on older version" - but it wasn't!

Ok, so, this session is about 3 months ago. We've been on 7.3.1 since way before that but now this session says "pro tools cannot open this session because it was created on an older version of pro tools" or something to that effect.

WTF?!? For one, the system hasn't been changed since that session was last modified and for two, Pro Tools has always been backward compatible; opening sessions from YEARS ago on 6.1 and the likes. so what gives?!?

I've seen this on sessions that have been corrupted at some point. Have any of the sessions moved drives or been transferred anywhere? How many sessions is this happening to?

So this session was created on 7.3.1 and you're still on that same version?
Please post system specs and the drive they reside on, what is that formatted for? Repaired disk permissions in awhile? Tried opening that session file's backup from its backup folder?

I had a situation the other day when the session I saved and closed 2 seconds prior was not able to be re-opened because it was "saved with a newer version". Of course literally nothing had changed in my system.

A classic pro tools move.

This can happen if the session file itself is corrupted. What happens on launch is that Pro Tools queries for the version that it was created in - if the session is corrupted and it returns garbage, Pro Tools doesn't know what to do with it, so it posts one of the 'older' or 'newer' messages.

We're working on having a mechanism that identifies if the returned data is corrupted and, if so, the message will state it.

Have you tried using 'Import Session Data'? Sometimes that will get around the corruption, depending on where it's occurring.

I've seen this as of yesterday!

This happens when sessions are moved to a USB key for transfer.

At least for us. Studio B is a TDM/OS9 room, and Studio A is a HD-3/OSX room. We had some students taking sessions home from Studio B, and they were unix executable files (no extension). when adding either pts / ptf we'd get that 'older version' pop up - moving that same session to a FW drive and then opening works fine. Important to note here - the original machine has no problems opening these sessions, just when moved (on a USB key / Flash drive) to another room (we have 5 rooms and 6 systems - 2 are OS9/TDM, 3 are OSX/HD).

(and 'Import Session Data' doesn't work for this corruption that we're seeing)..

Pro Tools 8HDcs1 trying to opening Pro Tools 7.4LE session.
The session was also transfered from a USB Flash drive.

Wont open or allow import session data.

Update:
Compressed (OSX Zip) and transfered over network worked fine..

PS. The original Flash drive (Above post) was a mac formated 1GB. session not zipped.
(7.4 LE to V8 HD)
Also to try and reproduce this, I moved this now PT'8LE session via Newly formated flash drive not zipped and it worked.

Note: There was a short video :30 inside the session.

This why we all back up right!
