You have to turn on the burner before you turn on the computer. My does the same thing if I don't turn on the burner first.

I bought a QPS fire wire drive and could not get it to work either, nor could I get QPS tech support to talk to me. After searching for new drivers, turning extensions off etc., the drive magically worked once. I then figured out that if I turn the drive off and on several times, if it doesn't crash my Mac, it will start working. It appeared to work once in about every 5 turn ons.

Try turning the on/off power switch on the drive several times until you see the green light blink when you turn it on. Then Toast should recognize it.

I asked QPS what the fix for this was and they said there was none. I also noticed that the drive is a SCSI drive with a SCSI to FireWire adaptor. I send the drive back and got a refund.

I had the same problem to begin with. Read the read mes' that come on the installation disk. It tells of conflicts, and suggests that if you have this problem, to disable any other driver extensions. I did this and it now works fine. Use trial and error to discover which extension causes it. I can't remember.

Good luck!
