Default External HD transfer

I got a new WD ssd External drive. I want to copy a bunch of PT files onto this ED. The files are currently on my computers ssd but also “backed up” on one drivecloud. This dell computer is newer, windows 11, 32ram, latest intel chips etc.

Whats the best practice for embarking on a large file transfer and should I be using a 3rd party (user friendly) sync software to handle this ?

Should i be transferring from a onedrive folder OR off the actual hard drive file on my comp?

Any advice appreciated

Stay away from One Drive, is the general consensus.

On all my machines, I just drag them from their original location (D drive) to whatever backup protocol I use. For my internal stuff, they go on an NAS drive. My freelance gig uses RAP CLIENT, but in either case I just drag ‘em and drop ‘em. Up to 3 at a time.

A WD SSD I would throw in the trash and buy something else from a reputable vendor not currently in multiple class action lawsuits for lying to customers about SSD data loss problems.

The answer for you invariably hinges on one question. How good have you been at project management? If you’ve been doing PT a while and are fastidious in keeping all related media in the associated project folder, then copying over project folders is a-ok. If you don’t know whether or not your sessions and media are unified in single project folders, then it would be better to use the save session copy function including media files to the new drive.

for macOS/Linux: rsync
for Windows: robocopy
for cloud storage: rclone

I for one have never seen the need to buy a file/folder synchronization tool when they are freely available and likely already a part of your OS.
hope this helps.

OneCloud shudder. Be very careful about backups... if the sessions exist in a OneCloud folder mirrored to the local drive that is not a back-up, it provides extremely weak data redundancy, and is entirely vulnerable to user error, the most common cause of data loss.

When you get a new SSD, the first thing to do is check it's bloody firmware is up to date. https://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=425632 (if you have ignored all the advice I've posted here in the past and going with a WD SSD you will need to work out how to check/update that firmware yourself).

And then you may need to create an NTFS filesystem on it, don't assume it's already an NTFS filesystem. If there is any crapware installed on the SSD I would reformat the entire thing.

Then deal with copying the content over.
