Default Transposing MIDI via Midi Real Time Properties

OK. I'm not terribly versed in editing MIDI (haha, as you'll see).

I have a MIDI region of notes (not sure if you call that a "clip"). Anyway, I want to make a copy and place it elsewhere in the song. I do that. Perfect. So far so good. NOW, I want to transpose JUST THAT COPY down one octave. When I click on that region of notes I want to transpose, it transposes down just fine except that it's also transposing the original region. What do I need to change to just transpose the copy region and not the original?

TIA!

In the meanwhile, I did figure out that if I renamed the copy, the transposing would only affect that newly named clip.

Are there other ways of accomplishing the same goal that anyone finds easier/harder?

Thanks again!

Turn off Mirrored MIDI Editing. It's in the Toolbar set under the main tools. If you have ToolTips on (in Settings) you should be able to hover over them until you find the right one. or check Page 859 in the manual (Reference Guide).

You can make a custom Key Command for it if it's something that you're expecting to toggle regularly.

As massivekerry said, it sound like you have mirrored midi editing enabled which just makes it so that all edits on a MIDI clip will be mirrored to all copies of that MIDI clip anywhere in the session. Usually, I find it's best to leave this off as it's easy to start arranging and editing and realized you edited something that you didn't want to.

In regards to different methods of transposition and MIDI Real-Time Properties:

I personally don't use MIDI Real-Time Properties. All of the same things can be accomplished with Event Operations (Transpose in this case {Option T}) and you can also use the "Restore Performance" or "Flatten Performance" operations.

Just a slightly different workflow. With MIDI Real-Time Properties, it's probably expected from the user at some point to "Write to Track" or "Write to Clip", while with event operations conventional use would probably be to use the operation and just restore the performance if desired to remove edits. Same results can be had, but Event Operations provides greater detail. The benefit of Real-Time Properties is that they can be toggled on/off to but it's pretty easy to just undo and event operation with the Z key.

Easiest way to transpose MIDI by octave is just using the shortcut: Shift Up/Down

Keyboard shortcuts for MIDI editing are on page 29 of the shortcut manual and note also a large amount of the shortcuts used for audio work the same exact way for MIDI as specified in the reference manual. Nearly all the ones you probably rely on. Also I'd recommend using Smart Tool but if you are someone who prefers to use individual tools with audio, than I imagine that approach would transfer over into MIDI editing for you as well.

THANK YOU, Massive and Skylar! Tremendous info!

PT is so deep, and I've been using it for decades (although not so much for MIDI). It's amazing the many helpful tools built into the program, and then again it's also easy to get into waters a bit too deep. Your suggestions are amazing!

Thank you!
