S/PDIF Device: no audio when recording, only on playback

This is the weirdest thing I've seen in 20+ years of using Pro Tools but here goes:

I have a BURL Bomber ADC connected via S/PDIF to an Apogee Ensemble and for some reason I get no audio when input monitoring or recording (meters for the Burl, Apogee, and Pro Tools all show a healthy signal), but anything I record plays back just fine once the track isn't armed anymore. This happens whether I'm monitoring off the analog outputs of the Apogee or the S/PDIF output to my Grace M905.

Everything was just working yesterday, only thing I've done since is backdate Sound ID Reference to a previous version to address an issue I was having, as per support's recommendation.

All hardware has been power-cycled and the computer has been restarted multiple times.

Update: it's not just the Burl, all inputs on the Apogee are exhibiting this problem. I already know it's gonna be something stupid I'm overlooking but I just can't find it. Does this ring any bells for any of you kind internet strangers?

2018 Mac Mini running 10.15.7

try creating a session and import saved session's data on the new one and see if the same issue occurs. Let me check for similar cases

This is about as dumb as I was suspecting it would be, but I need to post this in case anyone finds themselves in the same position:

Low Latency Monitoring was turned on. I never use that feature, so I didn't think to check.
