Default Avalon 737 quality in STEREO

Can anyone recommend a tube mic preamp that can compete soundwise with the Avalon 737 and costs about the same but that runs in stereo instead of mono? No compressor or EQ needed either.

Avalon 747

Actually, if you aren't looking for any EQ or compression, there are others that are probably cheaper but still good. I really haven't looked into any.

DigiSpider,

Are you looking for something that compares "sonic-wise" or "sound-wise"? Do you want the same "sound" as an Avalon, or just the same "level of quality"?

Does it need to be tube?

For alternative tube pre's in that price range, try these:

Manley
Aphex 1100
Demeter
Summit Audio

For solid state (clean):

Millenia HV-3
Grace 201
Earthworks
Amek

For solid state (character):

Great River NV
Phoenix Audio
Vintech
Brent Averill Neve repackage
Chandler Ltd.

And if you want to look at some more expensive ones just for kicks:

Cranesong Flamingo
Millenia M-2 (tube)
D.W. Fearn
GML

That should give you some variety to check out in the $1,500 upwards categories. They are all good and have recieved much praise. Of course the whole preamp subject is quite subjective, so YMMV.

Best of luck

I believe Avalon sells just mono micpre units as well (no comp/eq). maybe a pair of those? I think the are pricey though.

Thanks for everyones responses.

REtroJECT,
Isn't the 747 just a stereo compressor and EQ? Will it function as a proper mic pre on its own?

Kamurah,
I guess I mean "sonic-wise". I don't necessarily need the same "sound" but at least the same quality for sure. I'll check out some of your suggestions.

Steve,
I believe that the single micpre that Avalon makes is the M5 which is a solid state. I'm really looking for a tube micpre. However, the Averill Neve 1272 is defenitely worth looking into. Thanks for the link!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Sorry, I was kind of joking (poorly). The 737 and 747 share some similarities, but you are correct, it is mostly a compressor and EQ. I've seen it used a variety of ways (haven't used it myself), but I believe it is primarily meant for mixing down.

There have been some great suggestions from others and I would research them all (or most) and see what favors your situation the best.

I'd suggest selecting a mic pre based on your preferences for transparency versus color, and "how does it sound" rather than simply tube or no tube.
