Default Computer freezes completely

Hi.

We're running a PPC G5 Powermac system with a HD3 v. 8.0.1cs2. Attached to the computer is:
3 192 i/o
1 Sync i/o
2 screens
Ethernet
3 iloks, 1 syncrosoft key & 1 Logic key
Keyboard & mouse

The last couple of weeks the computer have experienced some serious freezes where everything locks up and the only option is to hold in the powerbutton.
We've had about 6 freezes in total and one day 4 of them came. It was on a session where I was running 88.2 kHz we're we usually runs 44.1, but I don't know if that was a coincidence.
It seems to be pretty random when this happens, and there has been no changes in either the setup or software.
There is no clues in the logs and I don't get a kernel panic screen.

It's really a long shot but does anyone have an idea what could relate to this?

Liquid or air cooled?

Will it lock up with nothing open?

Will it lock up with all the Dig.. er.. Avid hardware removed?

Hi Craig.

It's air cooled but no fans speeds up or anything & we haven't had any heat issues with it so far.

Haven't tried that. After we saw the freeze 1st time it didn't come back until 5 days afterwards. And when it happened again was with the 4 crashes in 1 day. This session did only have 1 tdm plugin on it and 4 tracks. After that day 8 days wen't before it was freezing again. So it's almost impossible to test it this way....

I will try to do that next week. Could maybe also be a memory issue.

Thanks for your help so far!

I tried running the Apple hardware test, and no errors where observed.
I also tried running the Digitest. Again everything passed.
I also tried watching if any fans we're dead, but everything runs smoothly and they don't go into "jetfighter" mode at any time.

I'm really clueless to what It could be.

Have you DiskWarrior'ed your system drive? That'd be my next move.

If that doesn't solve it, I'd look at the RAM and start removing one bar at a time to see if the crash still comes. I've seen lots of bad RAM pass the Apple Hardware Test and TechTool memory test, so I'd do the RAM swapping even if AHT tells you the memory is good.

From your description, I'd wager it's one of these two things. If it isn't, report back.

IHTH

Thanks a lot for your suggestions drenkrom.

Haven't tried DW yet. Maybe I should try to run it.

As described earlier there can go 5 days without any issues, which makes it very hard to test stuff like RAM without exchanging all of them, or have a studio downtime of several weeks.

Is there some better utilities to test for faulty RAM than the Apple hardware test?

plug in an empty fw drive. install 10.5 onto it, then boot from that drive. if the problems persist it's a hardware issue with the g5.

we have a few g5s here (dual 2.5s). one of them has had 6 motherboard replacements in 3 years (under applecare) – the issues were either totally unexpected freezing/crashing or loss of firewire ports.

Definitely do DW....

Is pro-tools always open when this happens? If so, also run the pref/database cleaner. As illogical as it may sound, that has fixed a lot of "seemingly unrelated" issues for me.. Sb
