Default Mac Pro intel dual core vs quad core

Hi

I am using a very old (Edit) mac Pro tower ver 1.1 -- 2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual core intel Xeon.
I am still running PT 10 with CPTK and everything is working perfect.

But I have the opportunity to buy a (Edit) mac pro(Tower) ver. 3.1, -- 2 2.8 Ghz Quad cor for a very good price.
Will this machine have a significant improved for performace in my PT 10 ?

And what about the 8 core.......?

I have 16 GB of ram now, but I have been told that in my old Mac G5 dual only
supports 4 GB ram when I´m running PT 10. (waste of money) Will a quad or eight core supports more ram ?

Will a quad or eight core support 64 bit ?

Yes I´m still on PT 10. I forgot to upgrade before 1 jan. 2016.
The offer was 399 us dollar to upgrade PT 10 with CPTK to PT HD.

Now the price just rise to 999 us dollars.
But that´s a different story.

But I would be very glad if any can give me info about replace my old mac
to a quad or eight core if I can find one.

Thank you

Michael

Pro tools 10 is a 32 bit only app. 32 bit apps have the 4gb ram limit. Pro tools 11 was the first 64 bit pro tools. I doubt you can run it on any G5 but I'm not 100% sure

Actually, there is no such thing as an Intel G5. I think the OP is equating the cheesegrater towers with G5s, and not the processors themselves. FYI, the G5s were a processor, created by IBM, whereas the ~2006 to current MacPro Towers (even the trashcans) use intel processors and have nothing to do with G5s. If you're running a true G5 (which I doubt), then any of the Intel machines will be a huge step up.

Thank you for answer, great.

Sorry it is a mac pro (Tower)1.1 2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual core intel Xeon.
16 gB ram 667 MHz DDR2 F8 DIMM

I have a offer for a mac pro(Tower) 3.1,2 2.8 Ghz Quad core and was thinking if this machine will give me significant more power.

Upgrade to PT 11 native won´t help me because PT 11 do not support my CPTK. So I have to stay at 32 bit or buy the HD.

I do appreciate your help and answers.

Thanks
michael

Hi Michael.

I think there are lots of sites out there with comparisons of different mac models performances. They will give you an idea of what you can expect, a doubling, tripling in performance. Protools or not, it's just numbers and calculations. Just google mac models comparison.

All I can tell you is I'm running PT10 on a mac 3.1 single processor quad core myself, and it performs quite well. OK, I'm not running 80 tracks and multiple virtual instruments, but I think it's a very capable machine. 8gb RAM. One SSD and three HDD's. OS on SSD makes a big difference. One thing to note is that for some reason RAM is quite expensive on this model.

And for me, on this mac, OS 10.6.8 and PT10 is running without problems. I partitioned the SSD so that one part is 10.6.8 and used for Protools only and the other is lion, could be capitan or anything, and I use that for everything else. Takes about a minute to switch from one to the other.

I've had this 3.1 mac pro for more than seven years now and it's still a great computer.

I'm very confused or maybe you are - what computer do you really have? Power PC Macs (G3, G4, G5) are NOT Intel machines. They use an old IBM designed chip. Or are you talking about MacPro machines which ARE Intel cpu chip machines?

And what exact Mac are you looking to go to? The number of cores has nothing to do with whether 64 bit programs are supported or not. Also has nothing to do with the amount of ram that is supported but the actual number of cpu chips does; the dual cpu machines generally support more ram than the single cpu machines.

Damn - just noticed this is a duplicate thread of one in General Discussion here: http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=378534

Against TOS to have duplicate threads on the same subject in different forums.

Thank you for answer.
yes I was not precise but it is a Mac Pro (tower) ver 1.1 2 x 2.66 dual core intel Xeon. I was just wonder if I will have significant more power if I upgrade to a mac pro quad core machine ?
Thank you.

Hi Ben

I have change the disk to SSD, yes big difference.
My system is running perfect, I was just curious if any one have tried to change from a dual core to quad core and if there was a big difference in performance.

Until now I stay on PT 10 and my CPTK.
Yes I know the RAM is expensive, I have 12 GB but PT 10 only support 4 GB.
I don,t know if PT 11 and 12 supports more RAM.

Always nice to have feedback.

Michael
