If you really need 5.1 or above, then I would suggest looking at an outboard solution that is more sonically transparent and just using the C24 for its control surface functions.

Just my 2¢

you have helped so much with this post. Im going to take your advice.

I've been out the loop for quite some time!

Also note ( I do not do surround to take with a grain of salt ) but I believe that with just the Carbon you can mix up to 7.1 Given there are 8 converters and 8 analog outputs ?

This question is unrelated to the first question I started this post with.

To connect external preamps to Carbon is DB25(line-in) to which ever preamp you would like to use, to run through carbon?

I have an avalon737 and a focustrite Scarlett I would like to have run through carbon so I can use them, using the carbons converters.

Humm well yes you could connect the 737 via either the DB 25 or with an XLR to 1/4 " TRS cable into one of the 8 XLR Combo jacks on the Carbon
(NOTE) you can connect up to 16 analog connections by using the DB 25 and the XLR combo jacks BUT ( it is an 8 or 8 configuration NOT 16 simultaneous ) in other words you can only record 8 channels simultaneously at any given time, in any mix of DB25 and Combo jack channels ---- AND ALSO anything plugged into the XLR combo jacks on the Carbon will override the same channel on the DB 25

As far as the Scarlet--- can you even by pass it's converters ??? And even if you could,, there is no actual point to do so, given neither it's converters or preamps are as high quality as the Carbons so that would in effect be going backwards performance wise, and logistically neither it nor the Avalon will give you more simultaneous channels to record The only way to record more than 8 channels with the Carbon is through the ADAT connections and with that you may run into latency issues ??

Re the Scarlett, I would move that on and grab one of the dozens of lightpipe preamps on the market. My personal favorite is the Midas XL-48(around $900) as it is stellar on drums. The Audient ASP880 or 800 would be next. If you really like the Scarlett sound, they make a new version of the OctoPre

Re using the 737, while the DB25 certainly works, it won't sound any different than using any TRS line input
