Still no solution for me either. I'm using Logic X while I wait for an update from Avid that will hopefully fix this.

Pro tools 11.0.2 is still a FAIL. The video is still blacked out in the grid and the videos is still blank in the external video window. AVID FIX THIS ERROR ASAP!!!!

I was getting this exact same error. It started yesterday when I finally needed to import and playback video in a session. Tried to enable the video engine but it would give me the waiting for video engine to launch prompt and basically hang. I left and came back over an hour later and it was still frozen.

I looked online and saw these threads with no solution. Yes, I have media composer 7 installed and wasn't looking forward to doing the whole uninstall routine.

So I tried going to the USER library and deleting all pro tools related prefs including DAE, pro tools, and anything that was related. I found an AVID folder in preferences that I'd not notice before. It has some pro tools related items in it so I trashed the folder.

Restarted holding N and enabled the video engine and about 20 seconds later it open and it's been working fine.

First of all apologies for my English :).

Try this:
1. Launch Pro Tools
2. Go to Setup/Playback Engine
3. Choose different hardware in pop-up menu (for example from HDX to ProTools aggregate I/O - it is important to make a change)
4. Uncheck all checkboxes in Playback Engine window.
5. Enable Video Engine
6. Click OK
(Video Engine should launch properly now)
7. Go to Setup/Playback Engine again
8. Choose desired hardware and other options. If you'll find Video Engine disabled turn it on again.
9. Clik OK.

Worked fine for me.
Regards
Martin

P.S.
If someone will find it useful please post it in proper language :).
Of course this is not useful if you have AMA - related issue.

I've now tried 11.0.2. Same problem.

Then also tried "carlone" and "Huberciczek" suggestions but they don't work for me.

Luckily, I have Logic X which is stable as a rock and does everything I need to do.

PT 10 imports video no problem but does not have the RAM access of PT 11 and vice versa for PT 11. Crazy.

So Logic it is...

I removed all the plug ins in the Library > App Support > Avid >AVX2 > AMA folder and was able to load video. Of course it took my 16 x 9 clip and made it 4 x 3 so that still sucks. Now I am launching Media Compose to see the fall out. I use the same machine for both about evenly, and there is no way I want to keep dragging these guys in and out of that folder, so apparently 11 may still need some work!!

Yup, it completely messed up Symphony / Media Composer!!! I am dumping those app support plugs back in and relaunching Symphony 6.5 to make sure that will get that back up and running. And yes, and I was able to view XD CAM / AVC / Pro Res - so I think that is a decision those of use with 'dual use' machines have to make. Deal with the moving of app support files back and forth - drag. Avid please fix this!!! To think that there aren't people using Media Composer on the same machine as Pro Tools is a bit crazy.

I just finished installing 11.0.2 HD. I then created a new file and enabled the video engine and for the first time, it worked.

But, then I tried to import a *.mov file and got a codec error. So, apparently the issue persists.

Hey all,
I've been having the same issue. Running a 2013 iMac that has both ProTools 11 and Media Composer 7.0 I've tried all the suggestions posted and they didn't work.

What did work was changing the install order.

We uninstalled both Media Composer and ProTools then installed ProTools First. Launched a session with video, THEN installed Media composer and the issue resolved. Both programs on the same partition and video playback works.

Weird, but effective.

I'm experiencing an issue with one of my computers where the video never plays back, but all audio, plugins, etc. are functioning normally. Only the video is perpetually frozen on whatever frame is shown at the selection point where I am starting the video. This frame does update when I stop playback and change my selection point, but when I hit play, it remains frozen on this screen.

Is there insight on how to correct this? This is my SiSoftware Sandra report for the problem computer:
