PT8.0/Win7 install problems
Hello again,
I bought a copy of PTLE8.0 off Ebay, and I've had enough blue screens and crashes that I really have lost the plot for an install. This is a new machine and I'll post the Sandra report and maybe get some incompatibility news, but for reference, Cool Edit 2000, Cubase LE4 and Reaper 64 bit all installed w/o any hiccups. SW is PTLE 8.0. The hardware is an 002R. I wanted to save the 002R after I built a Win 7 machine, and I concluded that 8.* was the last version to support the 002R but be able to run on Win 7 64 bit. I don't think I've gotten through any install or uninstall w/o a crash yet, and I've seen a rogue's gallery of error messages, and a different one every time. Read a post where Albee thought the VIA FW controller might be a culprit with PT, and even a bad install disc is possible. Anyway, I've updated QT to 7.7.4, and I previously installed the last specific hardware driver compatible with the 002R. I'm not sure how to focus enough to get a clean install, and I'm worried I didn't read that PT8 won't install on a 64 bit system in my research. Recapping, installs and uninstalls hang or crash, and the blue screen messages change every time. Thanks in advance for your help, Greg SiSoftware Sandra ID Host Name : Greg-Oct Workgroup : WORKGROUP Computer Model : GigaByte Serial Number : To be fille*********** Chassis : GigaByte Desktop Mainboard : GigaByte 970A-UD3 Serial Number : To be fille*********** BIOS : AMI (OEM) FC 01/28/2013 Total Memory : 8GB DIMM DDR3 Processors Processor : AMD FX(tm)-8120 Eight-Core Processor (4M 8T 3.42GHz/4GHz, 2.21GHz IMC, 4x 2MB L2, 8MB L3) Socket/Slot : AM2r2/AM3 Chipset Memory Controller : AMD F15 (Orochi) CPU HT Hub 2x 2.41GHz (4.82GHz), 2x 4GB DIMM DDR3 1.61GHz 128-bit Memory Module(s) Memory Module : G.Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBRL 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 (11-11-11-29 5-40-13-6) Memory Module : G.Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBRL 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 (11-11-11-29 5-40-13-6) Video System Monitor/Panel : ACR Acer AL2416W (1920x1200, 23.7") Monitor/Panel : NEC Technologies LCD52V (1600x1200, 14.9") Video Adapter : AMD Radeon HD 6570 (6CU 400SP SM5.0 650MHz, 1GB DDR3 1.33GHz 128-bit, PCIe 2.00 x16) Video Adapter : AMD Radeon HD 6570 (6CU 400SP SM5.0 650MHz, 1GB DDR3 1.33GHz 128-bit, PCIe 2.00 x16) Graphics Processor OpenCL GP Processor : AMD Radeon HD 6570 (480SP 6C 650MHz, 1GB DDR3 1.33GHz 128-bit) Compute Shader Processor : AMD Radeon HD 6570 (400SP 6C 650MHz, 1GB DDR3 1.33GHz 128-bit) Storage Devices WDC WD10EURX-63FH1Y0 (1TB, SATA600, 3.5") : 932GB (D:) WDC WD10EURX-63FH1Y0 (1TB, SATA600, 3.5") : 932GB (C:) WDC WD7500KMVV-11TK7S1 (750.2GB, USB2/SATA300, 5200rpm, 8MB Cache) : 699GB (H:) HP Photosmart 6510 (USB2) : N/A (G:) ASUS DRW-24B1ST i (1.8GB, SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW) : 2GB (E:) ASUS DRW-24B1ST i (SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW, 768kB Cache) : N/A (F:) Logical Storage Devices New Volume (D:) : 931GB (NTFS) @ WDC WD10EURX-63FH1Y0 (1TB, SATA600, 3.5") Hard Disk (C:) : 931GB (NTFS) @ WDC WD10EURX-63FH1Y0 (1TB, SATA600, 3.5") Elements-backup (H:) : 699GB (NTFS) @ WDC WD7500KMVV-11TK7S1 (750.2GB, USB2/SATA300, 5200rpm, 8MB Cache) Removable Drive (G:) : N/A @ HP Photosmart 6510 (USB2) Optical Drive (F:) : N/A @ ASUS DRW-24B1ST i (SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW, 768kB Cache) 0004_20042011 (E:) : 2GB (UDF) @ ASUS DRW-24B1ST i (1.8GB, SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW) Peripherals LPC Hub Controller 1 : ATI (AMD) IXP SB600/700/800 SMBUS Controller LPC Hub Controller 2 : ATI (AMD) SB700/800 LPC host controller LPC Legacy Controller 1 : ITE IT8728F Audio Device : Gigabyte IXP SB600 High Definition Audio Controller Audio Codec : VIA 0441 Audio Device : MSI Turks HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6000 Series] Audio Codec : ATI (AMD) HDMI Audio Serial Port(s) : 1 Disk Controller : Gigabyte SB700/800 SATA Controller [AHCI mode] Disk Controller : Gigabyte SB700/800 IDE USB Controller 1 : Gigabyte SB700/800 USB OHCI0 Controller USB Controller 2 : Gigabyte SB700/800 USB EHCI Controller USB Controller 3 : Gigabyte SB700/800 USB OHCI0 Controller USB Controller 4 : Gigabyte SB700/800 USB EHCI Controller USB Controller 5 : Gigabyte SB700/800 USB OHCI2 Controller USB Controller 6 : Gigabyte SB700/800 USB OHCI0 Controller USB Controller 7 : Gigabyte SB700/800 USB EHCI Controller USB Controller 8 : Gigabyte Etron USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller FireWire/1394 Controller 1 : Gigabyte VIA VT6308 1394 OHCI Controller SMBus/i2c Controller 1 : ATI SB800 SMBus Printers and Faxes Printer : Amyuni Document Converter 400 (2400x2400, Colour) Printer : Microsoft XPS Document Writer (600x600, Colour) Printer : HP Photosmart 6510 series (600x600, USB, Colour) Fax : Microsoft Shared Fax Driver (200x200) Printer : CutePDF Writer (4000x4000, Colour) Printer : Adobe PDF Converter (4000x4000, Colour) Scanners and Cameras Scanner : Hewlett-Packard HP Photosmart 6510 series (USB) (Scanner, USB) Peripherals Network Services Network Adapter : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (Ethernet, 100Mbps) Operating System Windows System : Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 6.01.7601 (Service Pack 1) Platform Compliance : x64 Windows Experience Index Current System : 5.9

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
What version of Pro Tools 8 did you buy? M-Powered, LE, HD? What audio interface are you using with it?

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
Joel,
I'll update my original post so folks will see this info in the first post. SW is PTLE 8.0. The hardware is an 002R. I wanted to save the 002R after I built a Win 7 machine, and I concluded that 8.* was the last version to support the 002R but be able to run on Win 7 64 bit. I bought 8.0 assuming I'd be able to update to 8.0.3 or 8.0.5 and I'd have a stable platform for the next several years. Today's strategy has been to try and install 8.0 w/o the 002R powered up. The install still seems to stall out, but PT left a desktop icon, the program opens, and I've even entered the validation code, but then the blue screen comes. I'm going to try multiple installs/repairs to see if it can be overcome through brute force repetition. Thanks, Greg

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
You need to pull a little trickery to make LE8 work on Windows 7. First thing you need to do is power OFF the 002 and run the uninstaller that is on the LE disk(you need to start with a clean slate), and download the 8.0.5 updater(if you haven't already). Then(after a reboot), run the installer(use the right-click and Run as Admin option). When the installer tells to to connect the interface, DON'T! Just click on Okay, let it finish and reboot. Then run the 8.0.5 updater(Run as Admin again). When the updater asks for the interface, power ON the 002, and wait about 8 seconds, then click on Okay, let that finish and reboot. Now, have the authorization code handy(the one that starts with "DIGI08......") and try running PT. The VIA FW controller may still be an issue, but you need a finished install to test. Also, which FW driver you choose can make or break the setup. Avid recommends the Legacy driver, but it has never worked for me(on 3 different PC's). The driver that works for me is the "TI Compliant..."
BTW, you can run PT9, 10 or maybe even 11 with the 002 and Windows 7(but being an AMD rig may present some problems). BTBTW...there were tons of defective LE8 install disks, so you may need to find a download if the disk refuses to complete.

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
Albee,
I've been through lots of combinations this afternoon/evening. I've never been quite so thoroughly thwarted other than prom night, I suppose. I've been running the PT uninstaller, and have almost decided to get Reg Clean for good measure, but that's too much info for this post. I shall try- 1. 002R off/PT uninstaller/boot 2. PTLE 8.0 install (run as Admin)/002R off/do not open PT to validate 3. Run the 8.0.5 updater (as Admin)/002R on)/power up 002R (3 relay clicks)/"OK"/boot 4. Open PT and validate I've made problems for myself, of course, and I hope none of them is really lurking such as an inappropriate Win 7 optimization, and I did install the correct V. 8 driver before I started this install, but I'll try to start at what's left of the beginning. THANKS!

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
OK, I'll call this progress. PT8 installed w/o a hitch. PACE came along for the ride. But no luck yet. Will embed comments in the steps.
1. 002R off/PT uninstaller/boot 2. PTLE 8.0 install (run as Admin)/002R off/do not open PT to validate *PT insists on a reboot to complete the installation, so I rebooted* 3. Run the 8.0.5 updater (as Admin)/002R on)/power up 002R (3 relay clicks)/"OK"/boot *The updater cannot find a valid install of PT and closes* 4. Open PT and validate *The PT8 installation when opened can't detect the hardware when the 002R gets turned on, so I don't get the chance to validate* I'll try a few other combinations, but with guitar in hand, I've written about two tunes just during the reboots...

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
OK, I ended up installing the 9.0.625 driver, then PT8, and then a reboot and finally it ran and allowed me to validate.
No matter what order I tried stuff in, the updater couldn't find a valid install of PT. Another wrinkle is that I wasn't able to select my C or D drive as a valid audio drive. Oddly, an external USB drive was valid. The invalid drives are NTFS 1TB drives if that helps. Thanks, Greg

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
Re the drives, open Disk Management(right-click on MyComputer>select Manage, next window, select Disk Management). Look at the left column with the drive numbers. Each will also say BASIC or DYNAMIC(or maybe something else), but BASIC is the required format for Pro Tools to record to(so if any drive says something else, it needs to be reformatted).

Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems
Under computer management, drives C and D are listed as Simple, Basic, Healthy, Primary and NTFS. Disc C is drive ID 1 and disc D is drive ID 0. The settings are identical to the external drive which is valid.
It's been long enough since I built this that I don't remember how I hooked up the DVD drives, but everything was SATA, and I don't think it's even possible to do a master/slave kind of thing, but I know better than that anyway. My reading indicates when people are stumped on this one, they rarely post a solution. The only possibility for a clue is that the timestamp on the database folder on the valid drive is 1.5 hours earlier than the two invalid drives, but I bet if I delete all three databases and prefs and reopen, it'll still be valid. Thanks, Greg
