Default Digidesign Chassis? Magma Chassis?

for the life of me can someone explain what the difference is between the Magma EB7 and the Digidesign PCIe to PCIe chassis?

all I know is GC charges me 2.3k for the magma and 2.8k for the digidesign. and I really paying $500 just for a digi sticker?

I called magma, they told me they're identical to spec, no difference. My foolio at GC Pro told me they beef up the psu in the digi box. If the EB7 is spec to spec the same then I'll pocket $500 and throw a digi sticker on the box myself.

Any help appreciated, I'm making the purchase in next 72 hrs.

Hi there,
For what it's worth I paid almost £2K for the Digi HD Expansion unit.
I chose it over the Magma thinking Digi would support their own kit longer than a third party.
How wrong I was ! 18 months later and the rack is not qualified for use with Leopard so If I want PT8 HD and all the new goodies that go with it, I've to scrap the rack and buy another one.
Ironically, If I'd gone for the Magma rack, I could have purchased a board set from them to upgrade it to the new version.

Take from this what you will but I wouldn't buy a Digi expansion chassis again.

If I can peel the Digi sticker off of omy old rack, I'll mail it to you ;o)

Cheers

AFAIK - digi dont build no expansion chassis themselves - all they do is to take a Magma and put their name on it.

Guess they charge extra because they ensure compatibility and offer support for it. If you buy the Magma you get Magma and not digi, support. So, I guess it is a matter of preference.

Myself, I am using a Magma with my harpertown mac and it works flawlessly.

yes but I need 7 SLOTS(use 5 already) also, its $300 for a reason. No tech support, from some sketchy german chop shop. I doubt it'll ever get certified for use with pro tools. thing just seems real wack to me.

The thread about the $290 chassis never states whether it really works or not. No one has reported back about getting one and trying it out. There's no reason to eat a mouse yet.

Be very careful with your choice of dealer. I've had two of the new Digidesign "eb7"s before the system started behaving itself. Lucky for me I had a good dealer and they were happy to swap my first chassis when I had problems.

Make sure your system works with Leopard and the current PT (7.4.2cs2?) before you install the chassis. I was chasing my tail for a while thinking it was a Tiger to Leopard issue rather than the chassis.

That said, it all works nearly perfectly now......
