Default Upgrade from Pro Tools 8 possible

Checking for a friend who has 8 on an old Mac Book Pro with an 002 interface. I told him the 002 is no longer compatible with new Pro Tools, but he also has a UA that is. I've convinced him to upgrade and use the UA from now on, but it looks like the upgrade to current version starts with Pro Tools 9. Is that correct?

He has also been using Luna lately, so maybe a 'cross grade' is a better option for him.

Thanks

There is always the 30-day fully-functional demo option free to try, question is can his old mac run modern PT?
Added: can his old mac run a version of mac OS to accommodate newest PT.

Yeah, he's got a newer MBPro that will run current OS. I think we've found an option that will work.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi there, do you mind saying what your friend did? I'm in a similar position and the options are a little confusing.

He's going to buy the $199 license since there isn't an upgrade path... even if there were, it would cost about the same. It's the one-year subscription with support... decent price, actually.

If you're saying that you have an old mac w/PT8, the subscription route most certainly is not an option, as it needs a computer that can run the latest operative system and PT2021.

Sure, the sub will take you back to 12.6 (confirmed with Avid support yesterday) but I have a different problem - the need to use HD Accel hardware, which will only take me to 10.3.10.

It's frustrating I can't get a legal PT 10 HD license without having to scrabble around on the second-hand market.
