Help! 6.1.2 update killed my computer!
i'm not sure what's going on here, but any help would be appreciated. my computer is a G4 dual -1ghz w/ a digi001, system 10.2.8. was doing fine in PT 6.1.1, then i just downloaded and installed the 6.1.2 update and after the install, hit restart and no all i get is the apple with a black bar over the top of it.
i ran diskwarrior from the cd, (hardware is fine, according to DW), replaced the directory, booted from another OS X disk and ran disk utility and repaired permissions. still. can't even get to single user mode, it doesn't make it past the first bits of boot...? anybody?

Re: Help! 6.1.2 update killed my computer!
did you try 'zapping' the PRAM on startup (COMMAND+OPTION+P+R)? Another thing you could try (if nothing works) is attempting to reset OPEN FIRMAWARE - procedure:
Startup holding COMMAND+OPTION+O (oh not zero)+F At the prompt type reset-nvram set-defaults reset-all (remember that this mode will use the US keyboard layout) the machine will boot and you will see! Hope this helps. Frank.

Re: Help! 6.1.2 update killed my computer!
thanks, but yes, i tried those things. tried many other normal OS X things too, i have another 10.2.6 system drive inthis computer and can boot from that to repair permissions. ran diskwarrior, drive 10, disk utility. nothing.
this black bar above the apple prevents even booting into single user mode, no command-s or-v. the disk itself looks fine when mounted. boots into OS 9. i had updated to 10.2.8 a few days earlier, it was on the restart after installing the PT/coreaudio 6.1.2 update that this started. on the apple support discussion boards a few others have reported this same thing, and while no help has been found, most of the thinking is that it is a problem of "third-party software or hardware" interaction with 10.2.8. of course i have never thought it necessary to, for example, take out all the pci cards from a computer before installing a system update... but who knows. any digi helper suggestions?

Re: Help! 6.1.2 update killed my computer!
ok then, what do i need to do to get ProTools/coreaudio drivers to work from another drive in this computer? must i entirely reinstall, 6.0 (which is all i have the disks for) then update to 6.1, then to 6.1.2?
this is a nightmare. my entire studio disk with all authorizations and libraries is unbootable now, though appears to be in perfect health when viewed from another disk. diskwarrior, drive 10, diskutility, SMART diagnostics all say it's fine. just can't get past that BootX apple into the kernel anymore. very frustrating.

Re: Help! 6.1.2 update killed my computer!
I'm not a tech, but I do know that Mac OS 10.2.8 is currently not a supported operating system. 10.2.6 is required for compatibility:

Re: Help! 6.1.2 update killed my computer!
The thing about insult to injury - and keep in mind that I do TONS of studio consultations and such - is it's hopefully a harsh reminder that staying 'compatible' is the best way to avoid such headaches.
Yeah, it's 'cool' to be on the latest and greatest, but is it really worth the hassle? I still get calls on a weekly basis from guys that haven't backed up their sessions - and now their audio drive died. Ouch! Live and learn, I guess... |

Re: Help! 6.1.2 update killed my computer!
yeah i was fooled by the "improved coreaudio capabilities" advertised in 10.2.8, plus the fact that it had been released, then pulled, then rereleased so i thought it would be fine. -- and it WAS with PT/digi coreaudio 6.1.1. It was only when digi suggested that all 6.1.1 user should update that to 6.1.2 that it wouldn't boot on restart.
i'm very unhappy. it's a weird problem, right afetr drawing the apple on the screen BootX fails to hand of booting to the kernel and make s ablack bar above the apple. game over. it seems like it's some problem within the bootX init that is improperly caching which extenstions to load into the kernel, but that's as far as i can deduce. it's happening to several people, according to apple's discussion boards, no answers yet.
