Red face Connecting external preamp

Hi Guys,

I have a query about connecting an external preamp into PT9... I'm currently running through an Mbox 3 but am considering buying a much better preamp in the shape of an Avalon... now I've heard you can still go through the Mbox as an interface, but is it at all possible to just connect directly... a longer chain, more problems, and all that... does PT9 easily recognise other preamps? And if so, is it just the same set-up as when using an Mbox?

Any advice is very welcome

Thanks

Balanced line-out from the preamp ---> balanced line-in of the Mbox 3.

Maddern,

Not to dissuade you, but if your considering an Avalon just make sure you are loading with one hell of a nice mic to do it, and your wallet justice!

Thanks for your replies guys.. EGS, so a direct connection into ProTools without the Mbox3 is not possible?
Dougfather, I understand where you're coming from... I've got a pretty good mic, Neumann TLM49.. great with vocal work.

I don't know which model of Avalon you're eyeing but let's say I wouldn't go to the end of the world to plug into a 737.
(The M2/M5 and 2022 are quite different beasts...)

To me the eq is the only redeeming thing this box has going for it. Unless there was a complete top of the line front end (pre+comp+AD) available to record, I'd rather plug into the MBox Pro be done with it. All things beeing equals, I prefer having access to better/different mics than anything else.
