Computer for pro tools
Does a laptop with an intel i7 processor, two 7200 rpm hard drives, an 1GB DDR3 ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 graphics card, running on windows 7 64 bit seem like a good choice for pro tools m powered 8?

Re: Computer for pro tools
At first glance, it should be fine, but the chipset is the "make or break" item, so see if you can find out that detail. Generally, an intel chipset will be fine(and its possible that all i7 systems use intel chipsets, I don't really know). Post a link to the actual computer and maybe one of the experts here can offer more exact advice

Re: Computer for pro tools
Here is the link to the laptop I am looking at. I am going to customize it with two 7200 rpm hard drives and 8 GB of ram. It has the 1GB DDR3 ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 graphics card and the intel i7 processor. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...ce/dv7t_series

Re: Computer for pro tools
As far as I know any mainstream Intel CPU is using a Intel chipset after socket 775. This means that you should be OK with with socket 1366, 1156, 1155 and presumably their mobile variants. I would like to point out that while the chipsets should be compatible the OEM can always modify the BIOS in ways that Pro Tools might find undesirable. The only reason I mention this is that the manufacturer may limit you BIOS options in order to meet power consumption or thermal goals. I'm not aware of anyone thats doing that but am just covering my butt pointing out their can be a big difference between Laptops and Desktops.
I think the computer looks good for Pro Tools. I have two suggestions. Consider getting a regular Windows installer disk and do a clean install of windows minus all the OEM bloatware (round up any drivers you may need first) And buy the notebook from someplace the will give you your money back or exchange it if it doesn't work with Pro Tools. A new MacBook with Thunderbolt might not be a bad idea if some one ever makes a worthwhile peripheral. And AKA has a good idea. If you could run the Latency Checker before you buy it could tell you a lot. Video drivers, Wireless cards and network chips can be huge latency inducers.
