Default Best Way to record DI Bass guitar?

Using pro tools express I always use the Eleven software (all I really have) it works great for my guitar, but when I plug in my bass it doesn't work that great, I clip and distort very easily even on the cleanest of settings, what do you guys typically do when recording your bass guitar? I do not have a condenser mic at the moment so I cant record my amp unfortunitally, I know that would yield the best result, but what are some other techniques to get a decent bass sound?

I usually use Sansamp, but I don't think it is available in Express. You could try the free version of Amplibube, I think it has some bass amps in there:http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/amplitube/

I always record the bass with just a DI(and light compression from a plugin, external compressor or both). When I get ready to mix, I add an AUX send to a mono AUX track and insert an amp sim plugin. While I usually use Amplitube's SVX with the Ampeg B15 preset(with mild tweaks), you can get very good results with any clean tube amp and a little overdrive(run the preamp hot or add an OD pedal). A little goes a long way.
