monitoring Mic signal during playback.

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to monitor the signal coming into the microphone during the playback of a session.

I have PTLE 7.2 cs10.

I can record just fine, and I can monitor the signal when the track is armed, but when I try to play the session to audition the vocals, I get no signal from the Mic until I stop the session.

If there was a way to do this, it would be very handy for me, and I am puzzled why I'm having this problem, as I don't remember coming across it before.

Hopefully, I am not missing something. But that's what this forum is for, right ;-)

I tried that, but if I have low latency monitoring enabled, then it won't let me use any plugs on my vox track, right?

I was hoping to be able to experiment with some vocal effects during playback, before I recorded the vocals.

No. "Alt + k" is the shortcut key for toggling the Monitor Mode.

If you have it in "Input Only" mode, you monitor (not surprisingly from the name) only the input of the record enabled track. If you have it in "Auto Input" mode (which I think is your case) then you monitor what's actually on the track during playback, and then the input during recording ("auto"matically switching between).


If you need to monitor the input continuously, no matter what monitoring mode you are in, you should use an aux track for the input, and then create a send from the aux through a bus to a record enabled audio track while in "Auto Input" monitoring mode.

I still prefer using an outboard mixer for monitoring, and I leave the tracks muted when recording. I sometimes use pre-fader auxes to send the signal being recorded to reverbs, I recall that doesn't work in monitor mode, either you get the delayed signal or you disable all effects and sends. Reverbs don't suffer much from latency. I'm also not keen on the idea of using an interface channel for talkback. Mixers suitable for those tasks are under $100, and they have uses elsewhere.
