Default Can\'t Allocate due to Fragmented Disc

Help! I've been running ProTools 5.0 on the 001 system for about 9 months now, and haven't encountered too many problems till just now: I installed Norton System Works to help my computer, now, I keep getting this error when I try to record onto my hard drive. It says "Can't Allocate Disc Space. Disc may be fragmented" or something like that... BUT!!! I just ran the defragment utility via Norton Disc Doctor, and I'm still getting the same problem. What's going on?!?!? Has anyone else encountered this problem? Oh... and yes, there's over 2 gigs of available space on my hard drive.

Use Norton Disc Doctor to check the integrity of the HD. Check again that disc for fragmentation.
Delete PT preferences file. If you are using the system HD (where System Folder is) try to record in another HD.
If you're trying to record 4 or more tracks, perhaps 2Gb of empty HD is not enough for PT to allocate.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem and i finally fixed it when i ran Norton From a seperate Disk, ie. Zip. Also i added another big ass hard drive and havent had the problem since. My guess is that it has to find enough space for 8 tracks of recording before it says o.k. , anyway i had 6 gigs availible when it happened to me. Also it got gradually worse as i recorded more and more. But try the Defragmenting first.

In Pro Tools, open the Setups>Preferences>Operation window and limit the "Open Ended Record Allocation" to 10mins and see if problems continue.

-Since the Norton Utilities CD-ROM is a bootable disc, it is generally best to run it from the CD. Since you have installed it, disable all of its associated extensions such as FileSaver, DiskLight and ScanDisk.
