Default Intermittent Ring-Modulated/Bit Crushed Playback of Recorded Audio

Hi, Everyone!

Longtime lurker, first time poster... I've been using Pro Tools for 20 years now and never run into this level of aggravation.

I'm having a serious issues with my brand new HDX system.

All recorded audio (even recorded internally using just a signal generator, or any other source) is bitcrushed and appears to be dropping samples, resulting in a ring-modulated/distorted sound when played back and a waveform that appears to be a mix of saw and square waves. This happens nearly everytime I record anything. It is not a clock mismatch issue.
(Please see attached images and audio clips below)

The only temporary fix I've come across is constantly changing the buffer size in playback engine, but this is ridiculous and counterproductive to actually running any kind of business with Pro Tools HDX at the studio core. I would add that this happens with ZERO plugins running.

Imagine capturing the perfect song-length vocal take, only to discover that the ring-modulated recording error has returned... "Ooops, sorry - Cut it again" followed by 30 seconds of quality recorded audio... followed by "Oops, sorry - cut it again" after changing the buffer setting again. Completely unacceptable.

I've ruled out my external hardware (I/O 8x8x8) by recording a known-to-be-clean signal from within the software to another track within itself and gotten the same result. I also get the same messed up audio when using Adobe Auditon, Ableton Live 10 and Adobe Premiere with the HDX card. When I swith to the built in RealTek HD, everything records plays back with ZERO issues... but using that defeats the entire purpose of an HD system!

The techs at Sweetwater have been great, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting follow up response from Avid tech support since my first callback when this problem initially popped up.

They've recommended several basic things that I had pretty much already done before contacting them:

1- Trash prefs

2- Try putting the HDX card in Slot 4

3- Try reinstalling pro tools and all related drivers (I've done this SIX TIMES now)

4- Update your Z440 bios

5- Check for and activate any Windows or driver updates

6- Use HP Advisor to set your bios settings to Avid's recommendations
http://avid.force.com/pkb/KB_Render_...qTV&lang=en_US

7- Turn off "Ignore Errors during playback"
8- Follow the Windows 10 Optimization settings http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/t...ndows-10-Guide

I even had a replacement HDX Core card sent, to no avail.

So....
Now I've had an HDX system with a Perpetual Ultimate License for a month and a half that has been completely unusable... which is eating into my license time and more importantly, my income.

I've read an insane amount of posts on here (and on Reddit + Gearslutz) of people having similar issues and nobody from Avid EVER comments or offers even a hint of how to resolve this issue that has spanned years, different verions of Pro Tools (frome LE to HDX) and different interfaces.

A few examples:

http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=360282
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=383533

http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=377162
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=373139

I have a support contract with Avid and when I call the number they say to use for Audio Help and press the correct numbers at the prompts, I keep getting video "techs" after waiting an hour++ per call... only to discover that they aren't even really techs - All they do is update your case with new information and tell you that, "Sorry, I am unable to transfer you to anywhere else in our system"

I can't even see or interact with my case # because the initial case was setup up by Sweetwater tech support and it's not even listed in my Avid Support Profile. During BOTH of my attempts to get an Avid tech that would be useful yesterday, they both said they would attach the case to my account. I'm still waiting.

As I mentioned above, people have recommended constantly changing the buffer size, but that is a band-aid/workaround, NOT a solution. For the amount it costs to have a system like this, Avid's engineers should be on top of this and corporate should should let their dedicated customer base know that it is a recognized issue/bug.

I'm really not trying to be a jerk here, but I am beyond aggravated and a total loss for how to proceed. I've been going around in circles with them for weeks on end and I'm losing projects left and right. Clients will only be so understanding for so long.

Any ideas?

Thank you so much!

-Jason

Strange indeed Here's what has me confused:

Total Memory : 64GB ECC DIMM DDR4

Processors
Processor : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1660 v4 @ 3.20GHz (8C 3.2GHz, 2.7GHz IMC, 8x 256kB L2, 20MB L3)

I'm far from being an expert, but the report makes me suspect a RAM problem. One line reports 64 GB of RAM, but later, the report only shows a single 16GB stick(where it should show 4), assuming all 4 sticks of RAM are identical(which they SHOULD be). I would remove 2 sticks and install 2 in the correct slots for using 2 sticks. If that doesn't help, pull those 2 and try the other 2 sticks. You might need to go online to get details on the specific motherboard you have(so you know which RAM slots to use for only 2 sticks).

Default Re: Intermittent Ring-Modulated/Bit Crushed Playback of Recorded Audio

Hey there,

Did you find any solution for this issue as I‘m facing the same problem.
Also working on Windows 10 with a HP Z440 Workstation with ProTools Ultimate 2020.5 on HDX with a Focusrite Red4Pre Interface.

The distorted, ringmodulated, Bit-Crushed sound appears when bouncing offline, online and even when bussing and recording into an audio-track.

Whats interesting is, that playback is running smooth, but the recordings and bounces are damaged.

Whats further interesting is, when recording M&E, Mix and VO busses at the same Time, the routing of the bussing goes nuts and ends up with e.g. right side of the mix-bus going to the VO-Bus. Let alone the mangled sound.

So far I could verify that the Focusrite is working properly as I did some tests via Thunderbolt on a MacBookPro.

Also ProToolsSoftware seems to work, as I had to switch the system back to the RME Interface I used before. (In the middle of a project with customers hearing that extreme destroyed sound coming out of a very expensive workstation)

As proposed I also did the changes and optimizations for the BIOS with no luck.
So on Friday I gave up and ordered another HDX card for testing.

After reading these entries I have little hope, that the new card will be solution for my problems. So any help is appreciated as the next project is round the corner.

Thanks for any advice.
Michael

Looks like I'm having the same issue, but on the inputs of my hdx card. Our stem recorder will start fine, but suddenly it goes haywire and I get exactly what you are experiencing.

Default Re: Intermittent Ring-Modulated/Bit Crushed Playback of Recorded Audio

Just a quick update as we are experiencing the same thing here.

We do film post mixing, so the HDX system is used as a stem recorder (recording 5.1 and 7.1 stems most of the time).

First time the issue popped up was on a home-built PC, and we were recording 7x 5.1 stems for a movie. We tried lots of things, and thinking that the issue was a compatibility thing with the Motherboard we decided to swap for an old Mac Pro 5.1 for the remainder of the movie.
The Mac Pro used the same HDX card, cables and audio interface (DAD DX32), and had no issues.

As the Mac Pro was a bit old, I decided to buy a used Z440 (approved) to use as a stem recorder. We received it this week, and did all the BIOS edits required by the ProTools compatibility documents.
Installed the HDX card, and fired up the same 7x 5.1 stem session. SAME ISSUE AGAIN!

We did not have the problem on Mac at all.

So we are now looking a bit deeper into it, and tested with a single 5.1 track in record, and had no issues.
I'm starting to think that maybe HDX on Windows has an issue with more than 2 digilink connectors used as inputs?

I'll keep testing and let you know.

UPDATE:

Talked it over with the tech at local company 44-1, and he said he had a similar issue not so long ago, that was resolved by changing the NVIDIA video card driver for the Quadro K2200.
What he had me do was try one of two that he knew worked. These are actually quite old drivers.

391.33 (this is the one I installed)
412.16

We have the stem recorder running for nearly two hours now with 7x 5.1 stems in record with NO glitches or channel swaps.

Default Re: Intermittent Ring-Modulated/Bit Crushed Playback of Recorded Audio

So I tried an tested the advice with the older NVidia-Driver.
Same issues as before.

Even after a remote-session with AVID yesterday, the issues appear.
Sometimes it'll work for a few minutes, sometimes the distortion and bus-juggling appears a few seconds after start-up.

This is really annyoing.

Help very appreciated.

Hi, did you guys find a solution to this, is there a reason for the error?
We just had the error today on our HDX Win 10, Nvidia GTX1070 August driver installed.

As I said, the proper driver and video card solved it here. But I'm speechless at how unresponsive AVID are for this sort of issue which basically renders the whole system unusable.
