Default Windows XP mode on Win 7

I got PT 7.1 and would like to run it on my lap top with Win 7. I can't do this with out running PT8...right? I saw that there is a Windows XP mode for running programs on Win7 that run on XP....PT7 for example. So if I install that on my lap top will that work??

While its not supported, it MIGHT work. With unsupported setups, you just have to be bold enough to try it, big enough to accept if it doesn't work, and cautious enough to have a backup plan(drive imaging is a must for EVERYBODY that owns a computer)

Try it and see. Make sure the installer is also in XP mode and then run windoze update to bring any ms libraries it installed up to date. I'm running lots of xp stuff that way on W7.

Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 is really just a prepackaged Microsoft (nee Connectix) Virtual PC virtual machine with Windows XP installed. Its not just say an different API interface to Windows 7. Since its a virtual machine it has some overhead and as typical of these environments does not do well for very latency/scheduling critical workloads like with DAWs. Even if you got it to work at all it is quite likely to be unstable under heavier workloads. And Avid definitely does not support doing this. I would just not waste time on this. The same is true for products from VMware and Parallels etc., all jus a bad idea with DAWs, especially with current Pro Tools versions that are very latency/scheduling sensitive. If you want to run XP, try find an old install disk/license somewhere. Or bite the bullet and upgrade.

Yah I read the Virtual XP info on Microsoft and they said it doesn't do well with programs that require hardware. I'm guessing that its going to be a waste of time. Bummer! I can get PT10 for a good price, but for the amount I use it at present its just not worth it...yet.:)
Any ways have a good Friday and if I decide to do this Ill definetly post results...nothing to loose right!
