Default Re: PC build for low record latency? Pro Tools | Carbon?

(2 of 2)

What I'm doing

Using Pro Tools 12.8.0.
Tracking only a single track at a time.
Tracking only:
- mono audio tracks (keyboard or vocals),
- stereo instrument tracks for drums (Xpand!2)
- Stereo instrument tracks for soft-synths (virtual instruments from the Arturia V-Collection))).

IO buffer sizes and

Under Setup > Playback Engine on a session I'm having difficulties with, it says:

Playback Engine: Solid State Logic ASIO Driver
Settings:
H/W Buffer Size 128 Samples
(No boxes are checked)
Disk Playback:
Cache Size: 256 MB

What's in a typical session

One particularly large (for me) session I'm having trouble with comprises:

1x Click Track
4x Mono Audio Track:
- 1 with Waves SSLGChannel
- 2 with Waves SSLChannel
- 1 with Waves SSL Channel, EQ3 1-Band, and Waves SSL Comp.
1x Stereo Instrument Track for MIDI drums. Numerous plugins:
- XPand!2
- 2x EQ3 1-Band
- Waves SSLChannel
- SSL Native Drumstrip (which I just clicked on, causing my session to crash).
2x AUX Track (effects)
- 1 (Reverb) with Waves Abbey Road Plates.
- 1 (Delay) with Waves H Delay.
(The only track sent to these AUX effects is the MIDI drums).

All the above is routed to
1x Stereo Aux "Sub-mix". Numerous plugins:
- Waves TG12345
- iZotope Ozone 8 Vintage Tape
- iZotope Ozone 8 Vintage Compressor.
- iZotope Neutron 2.

Finally, I have:
1 x Stereo Audio Track (for a reference track). No plugins here.

1xMaster fader. No plugins here.

This is a relatively typical session, except that:
- I usually use more Stereo Instrument Tracks for my soft synths (in this case I used more Mono Audio Tracks than is normal).
- I usually have one or two more "mastering" type plugins on my "sub-mix" and Master Fader (eg, iZotope Tonal Balance Control).

How small a IO buffer can I run before Pro Tools crashes?

At my H/W Buffer Size of 128 Samples I can generally PLAY the above session at that's about it.

When I record-enable an audio track in that session, Pro-Tools generally "crashes" (by this I mean goes "(Not Responding)" and needs to be closed or restarted). I MIGHT be able to do a line check (with significant latency). If I'm REALLY lucky, I MIGHT be able to record up to 15 seconds of audio (again, before Pro Tools "crashes").

I NEVER get error reports. Pro Tools just freezes and needs to be closed or restarted. An error report never comes up.

Drives

In my Sandra report:
The first mentioned Disk (the WDC 1 TB SATA) is my storage drive. Here, I save:
- Pro Tools session files
- Pro Tools audio.
- Effects plugins.
The second mentioned Disk (the Samsung EVO 500GB) is my system drive. Here I save:
- My soft-synths (Artirua V-Collection)
- My Plugins.

SSL "monitor mix"

I have tried fiddling around with the SSL's "monitor mix". I'm not sure if I'm using it properly.

I find this knob doesn't help. The latency is so bad that I can't take ANY signal from Pro Tools while "overdubbing" (by this I mean just recording a new vocal or keyboard part in an existing session). The latency forces me to turn the "monitor mix" knob hard left for 100% "input monitoring". But then, naturally, I can't hear a thing from Pro Tools (eg, click track or existing recorded tracks) so I can't do my overdubs in those conditions either.

Delay compensation

I have noticed that "Delay Compensation" is invariably checked in all my sessions.

A common problem

Because the session I outlined above keeps crashing Pro Tools, I haven't even been able to test (within that session) for another common problem I generally face in all my sessions.

I thought I would take the opportunity to outline it here.

The problem is that when I track my overdubs to a click (eg, an audio track or a MIDI track), my audio transients or MIDI notes (as relevant) invariably end up sounding AHEAD of the click on playback.

WHILE TRACKING, I'm careful to play ON the click (I'm a drummer as well and always try to "bury" the click).

However, no matter how "in-the-pocket" or "on-the-click" I think I'm playing while tracking, my audio or MIDI is invariably AHEAD of the click upon playback (indeed - you can always see in the Edit window that the relevant transients or MIDI notes are invariably AHEAD of the grid).

Within any particular track, my transients or MIDI notes are always ahead of the grid by a very similar margin. That is, I don't think it's a case of my timing being totally "out" because if that was the case, I imagine that my transients/ MIDI notes would be all over the grid.

This is another ongoing issue that inspired me to post here. Maybe my timing really does suck, and what I perceive to be "on" the click is actually well "ahead" of the beat....

More to come...

That's it for now!

I know I haven't got around to all your questions, but I'll pick this up again to try to cover everything I've missed within the next day or so...

Best,

Lord Gerkin.

I agree with everybody above; your current computer should work. Have you carefully done ALL (don't skip any) of AVID's recommended Optimizations? Additionally, have you done ALL of AVID's recommended Troubleshooting steps? Move all 3rd party plugs out and test tracking @ buffer64. If you ultimately decide to get a new PC, you can buy or build. Either way, do those simple Optimizations!!!

Buy a pre-built? I'd look at Dell XPS Desktop.

Custom build? Even if it's your first time building, I would not be afraid of it at all. There's TONS of good build articles/videos out there. If you watch/read a few, you'll quickly discover that the build process is truly not brain surgery. Start by picking your CPU, then the motherboard, then RAM. For CPU, I suggest a 10th/11th/12th gen Intel i7 or i9 (12th gen i5 is also a great choice). The CPU dictates the motherboard. For 12th gen, you need a Z690 mb, 11th gen ---> Z590, 10th gen ---> Z490. Then, pick compatible RAM (16Gb absolute minimum). Most build info you'll find is aimed at gamers. Gamers & DAW users both need excellent single-core performance (rather than multi-core performance which is needed for video renders). While gamers need top-tier video cards, DAW users can opt for a more reasonable video card or even use integrated graphics. Go with Windows 11. Post your parts list over here: https://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=238426 and someone will give you feedback. Hope this helps!

Within any particular track, my audio transients or MIDI notes (as relevant) are ALWAYS ahead of the grid (all by a similar margin within any given track). That is, I don't think it's a case of my timing being totally "out" because if that was the case, I imagine that my audio transients/ MIDI notes would be ALL OVER the grid (as opposed to being more or less CONSISTENTLY ahead of the grid)

This is another ongoing issue that inspired me to post here. Maybe my timing really does suck, and what I perceive to be "on" the click is actually well "ahead" of the beat....

More to come...

That's it for now!

I know I haven't got around to all your questions, but I'll pick this up again to try to cover everything I've missed in the next day or so...

Best,

Lord Gerkin.

Just bumping this thread, as he posted elsewhere the OP is having Permission Denied errors trying to reply here. I suspect sometimes others posting to a thread helps stop that problem... we'll see.
