Default Pro Tools M-powered & Roland XP-30 MIDI compatibility

Hello y'all!

I'm a newbie who has recently purchased ProTools M-Powered 7.3. The sound card I am using is an M-Audio Fast Track Pro.

Everything seems to be working thus far except for MIDI signal reception, and I'm wondering if it's because I'm using a Roland XP-30 for a controller.... a device that is notably absent from the list accessed from the MIDI Studio Setup Manufacturer/Model dialogue(I see Roland XP-10, 50, 60 & 80 models can be selected).

Perhaps this problem stems from inexperience, but I'm wondering if this is the problem's source --and if so, how do I go about fixing it? Dude at the music store told me the XP-30 should work fine (it works well for straight audio input).

Thank you.

This is most likely your problem.

No. The only thing that the missing XP-30 in MIDI setup is going to do is not allow you to view the patch names in Pro Tools. Everything else will function just like it is supposed to, even changing patches, you just won't see the patch names.

Dude at the music store was right.

What is it exactly that you are trying to do? Did you want to play the xp-30 sounds? Did you want to control a softsynth? It would help us give you instructions to get it working if we knew what you were trying to do.

The basics:
  • create an instrument track
  • insert the softsynth on the instrument track and selct a patch
  • play the controller
That's pretty much it. If you have all the hardware connected properly, that should work. If not, you will have to tell us how you have everything connected so we can tell you where you went wrong.

Thanks for the advice. I had posted this in the LE section as well and SixChurchStreet advised enacting the Factory Reset on my (used) XP-30, and that seemed to do the trick (the trick being communicating ANY MIDI signal from the keyboard to the software). I'm now at a stage where some serious messing around can commence

Cheers!
