Default Confused by DB25 pinout of MTRX Digital IO

With the HD IO the DB25 carried 8 channels of IO. 2 channels per wire. Hot, Cold, GND.

With the MTRX internal DB25 for digital audio, even though the MTRX manual states the connection follows the Tascam standard it seems it doesn't. It looks like there is only 1 channel per wire. The 8 channels of IO are split into two connections. Is this really the case and if so, why?

I still haven't dug into the pigtail of a Digital expansion card, so I'm not sure what that looks like.

I'm trying to go into a BALUN that has phoenix connections and then converts 110 to 75 via BNC connection to a jackfield. The way it's laid out now I might have to rethink how I wire things up.

Thx in advance,
Scotty D

The manual is misleading, "channel" refers to a stereo AES/EBU channel. There are 16 real channels of I/O on the chassis, split across two DB25s.

Go google some documents about "single-wire" and "double-wire" AES, that should clear your confusion.

I don't think this is relevant, I don't believe the MTRX supports double-wire AES. It's just the confusing terminology in the manual.

I wouldn't know, don't have Carbon.

But to oversimplify things dual-wire AES is like SMUX to ADAT. With that said, if you are using single-wire (normal) AES things are simple: one shielded twisted pair cable (110ohm XLR "mic" cable) carries two channels.

Sure, but the question was about the MTRX, not the MTRX Studio or Carbon. :)

I read it as 4 Stereo in AES digital and 4 Stereo Out AES digital (Per DB25), (16 Ch total).

Ah yes, I guess “channel” in the manual is intended to refer to a bidirectional mono channel then :)

Yes that is how normal AES works. One DB25 connector = four XLR's both ways = 8 channels in 8 channels out.

It definitely is misleading when you compare to the pinout of the HD I/O and how it labels channels. And I don't think the manual for the MTRX mentions stereo pairs either. So there in lies the confusion.

Where does it say stereo pairs. My guess is it's assumed you know already.

Yup that's what I had in my head, just wasn't sure if they were doing someting in a non-standard way.

Thx for the clarification guys.
