You need a separate drive for your session drive. In the case of a iMac, this will probably be an external firewire drive running 7200 or better.

My Opinion: I would not get a iMac. I had a iMac w/ Firewire Glyph External Hard Drive, worked great for me for about 6 months until I started to learn what I was doing and started to use more Plug-Ins and stated printing all of my tracks so I had a much higher track count. I personally would never use an external Hard Drive to record to ever again, even thru Firewire you just can not stream a 45 plus count session into the computer fast enough. You want a Tower, Desk Top that you can have 3 Internal SATA drives all Caviar Black/500GB.750GB.1TB/7200RPM/32MB or 64MB Cache/ 3.0GB or 6.0GB Transfer rate Hard Drives. With this set up you will have Max power and Wav. streaming. Just my opinion, Thank you

Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for the info! I hear where you're coming from. The thing is, I am only going to use this for voiceovers...two or three tracks max. The external hard drive does bother me so I'll probably keep looking. I talked to someone from RAIN computers and they put together a configuration that had two internal hard drives with room for two more. Apparently they configure computers specifically to work with Pro Tools. Thanks again for your help, Brent.

I don't think the Imac will be a problem. I've done fine with my 2007 Imac running 96 tracks through firewire off one drive. I think there may have been something else going on in Justus's setup.

I've been recording to my system drive in my iMac for four months. Track counts of 30-40 with average amount of plugs. Tons of edits and I only ever consolidate drums. No issues at all. Ever. No it's not recommended but as you can see, it's doable. If you're just doing voice overs I wouldn't go overboard. Just my opinion.

Okay, all kidding aside here - I am interested in why you are not having success running PT9.

I have PT running on dozens of systems ( I teach audio and sound design) with unbelievably wide specs in our lab, student computers and the systems in my studio and on location rigs.

In summary, life is good with an contemporary system running PT9. We have 'pushed' PT on some subordinate systems with reasonable success. As I said, a $1099 MacBook Pro with 4GB runs PT fine - on both the OSX and BootCamp Win7 side.

Personally I'm not a fan of the iMac - I 'own' about 50 of them in several labs and they are not fun to work on - they look nice but try to change out a hard drive, or any component and you'll wish you had an MacBook. I realize that is one perspective, but I have had my brand new MacBook Pro open twice since February doing upgrades to make it rock solid for audio production - not fun on an iMac

Thank you for your response! I have been burned too many times purchasing software that didn't work or didn't work as advertised, ie. Notion Protege, and some Cakewalk products. Since I just got the PT9 I am going to make mighty certain that the computer I buy for it is going to work. I was just about to purchase the iMac, however, your post has given me pause. I will check out the MacBook. Thanks, Brent
