Default Magma PE6R4-I Setup Question

So I finally got around to setting up my Mac Pro and Magma PE6R4-I. It didn't go as easy as expected even after reading a ton of posts prior. Without going through my boring headache I'll just skip to the end result.

1 - Host card would only be recognized when it was in the 4th slot (furthest from graphics card). Magma/Digidesign/Avid clearly says to put it in the #2 slot closest to graphics card for a Mac Pro.

2 - My Lynx Aurora 16 wouldn't link to Pro Tools until I moved the Digilink cable to the last HD Accel card. Card order is correct, Slot 1 Core slots 2&3 Accel.

System works and everything seems fine but am I good to go with all of this backwards hookup?

Thanks,

Keith Moore

Hi Keith,

it is actually the top slot thats recommended by Magma. This is the one furthest away from the graphics card.
I know cause I contacted Magma before buying my chassis.

I can't really help with your second point though as I don't have a Lynx I/O but you could try and put the cards in reverse order (in the chassis), starting with the core card in the last slot, then going backwards.

Oliver is right. Magma told me with G5's and Mac Pro's that the host card should be in the slot farthest from the vid card.

Also, I'm using an A16 with no probs running on the core card. That is what you need to make happen. Anything else is risky business. You have the core closest to the power supply in the Magma, correct? Slot 1 is basically in the middle of the chassis. Make sense? Just double checking that you didn't start from the outside edge of the chassis, which would kind of seem like slot 1, but it isn't.

Let us know how it's going!

peace

This is from the support docs provided from Digi:

Mac Pro and Power Mac G5 (PCI Express)
The
PCI Express-equipped Mac Pro and Power Mac
G5 have three PCI Express (PCIe) slots (named
slots 2, 3, and 4). The PCI Express slot numbers
increase from
bottom to top as you face the open
computer case from the side. Install the

Accel Core (for PCIe) card into PCI slot 2.

I'm more concerned about having to connect to the accel card at this point. I have also read to use the middle slot and #4 slot.

From looking the chassis from the rear I have the Core card to the right of the slot that's not for use. Then proceeding towards the right I have the Accel cards. When I connect it to the core card and launch PT's the Aurora 16 un-syncs and Pro Tools cannot find the interface.

Something is wrong then. Have you tried using the JUST the core card and Aurora only? I would start there. Get rid of the other 2 cards for now. Also, make sure you have the latest firmware for the Aurora first, then try with just the core and report back.

We'll see what we can do!

I planned on trying both. It was late when I finally got it working so I figured walking away and getting some feedback was the better choice.

Thanks

I wrote that I got my info from Magma!
Contact Ariel @ Magma and quote me.

And put the cards in reverse order as suggested as both methods work, the latter better for some.

I know I know! I was just simply sharing that information on both ends differ. I'm making my list of things to do. Gonna start with Aurora Firmware update and proceed from there.

Thanks for all your help.

Keith:
If I read this right, what you quote from the Digi support docs is for the Core PT card, NOT the expansion card to go to the Magma chassis and it seems like you may be confusing the two.

As to the second paragraph & the Aurora, there's a couple of threads here where a similar problem points to the ribbon cable being backwards.

Yeah I've been reading and joined those posts last night. I am 99% sure that my ribbon cables are backwards. I'll repost later once I confirm.
