Default Newbie Quick Question - Y or N Answer - Help...

Hi - I am about to buy a Dell 8500 laptop - 2 Quick Questions:

1) On board is a Pentium 4 processor not a Pentium 4-M processor which is only noted in the compatibility page by Digi - Will the Pentium 4 processor be fine? - I found out the laptop is supported with an Intel Chipset

2) The Dell 8500 does not come with Hyper Threading - Even though you are disabling this in Bios - Will my system be fine with Pro Tolls if Hyper Threading is not offered on this model?

Here's the specs:
DELL INSPIRON 8500 LAPTOP
Mobile Pentium 4, 2.4 GHZ,
1 FULL GIG OF PC2100 DDR SODIMM INSTALLED
30GB FAST ATA HD
24x CDRW/DVD COMBO DRIVE
32 MB DDR 4X AGP ATI M9 3D Video Card

I have a seperate drive (80 Gigs) for PT audio only not listed...

Thanks in advance...

Well, the Pentium 4 is fine - but I think you'll only get a response on this question if you're lucky enough that somebody else has tried this actual model. Laptops can be a little finicky.

Hyper threading is not a requirement for computers - if you have it - disable it. If you don't have it, well....
Pentium 4 is fine. Just check the firewire compatability. Dells are usually compatible sine they are preconfigured and dont have conflicting drivers. But PC s are PCs - you pays your bucks and you takes your chances...or wait until someone with an 8500 responds.

Hi there,

I own/use an 8500, p4 2ghz with 1gig ram, 30 gig internal Hard Drive, 40 gig External (firewire).

I have the mbox, but am about to bump up to the 002r. I've had no issues with it so far although i haven't put it through it's paces yet. I'll try to run the DAVEC test soon and report in since there seems to be very few 8500 users here.

I do love the widescreen laptop, you can get a decent width edit and mix window on the same screen. I'd say go with it.

I also use the same laptop to edit video with Avid XDV and it hasn't hiccuped yet. I've done much more video work on it than audio so I think you'll be very happy with the purchase.

I hope that helps.

Bobby
