Default Protools LE 7 on Macbook Pro laptop.I can't update the software

I've been using Protools since 2007 and haven't updated the software. It was installed on my PC but I need to record on the road so want to have it on my MacBook Pro.

1st ?: I can't find the versions to update and I was told I have to have at least 7.4. Can I just buy 8 or 9 and load it and be done with it?

2nd ?: Do I have to have an external hard drive to plug in the Digidesign USB as I can't just plug it in to the laptop?

Probably sophomoric questions but I'm getting very crabby about this and need to solve it now.

Thanks for any help.

Mary

1. Yes, but check the compatibility document to qualify the machine specwise before you buy.

2. External drive certainly for anything beyond testing. Firewire is approved, USB is not.

Need more help? Post specs as directed.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I know another dumb question...do you have a recommendation for an external hard drive for my laptop?

Thanks and enjoy the weekend.

Best,
Mary

I suggest you scroll down to the Storage Subsystems forum and look for the discussions around OWC drives. I don't have OWC myself, so no personal recommendation (all of mine are either old and now obsolete or drive plus enclosure DIY jobs).

Technical considerations ...
FireWire (1394). Other connections (esata, USB) are a bonus, but optional.
7200 rpm.
Oxford chipset. This can be tough to confirm, hence my sending you to check OWC based on other's experience.
32 Mb or greater buffer.
Spinning disc. Solid state drives aren't approved yet.
